BRENHAM - CITY OF Building Inspector in BRENHAM, Texas
Summary
Performs field inspections of permitted construction on all types of commercial and residential construction and alteration projects to determine compliance with permit conditions, adopted building codes, ordinances, and other applicable laws.
Starting Pay Rate is: $21.19 per hour.
Essential Duties and Responsibilitiesinclude the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Coordinates, schedules and performs on-site inspections to ensure compliance with applicable codes; including IRC, IBC, NEC, and International building, gas, energy, plumbing, and mechanical codes and inspects for compliance with zoning and other ordinances such as parking and landscaping;
- Maintains computer records concerning inspections, and prepares written reports and correspondence;
- Consults with homeowners, property owners, builders, etc., to discuss plans and compliance with minimum codes on buildings;
- Answers questions and interprets ordinances, policies procedures and building code enforcement concepts to assist applicants and the general public at permit office and in the field;
- Consults with engineers, architects, and builders, to discuss plans and compliance with various codes, often on-site;
- Conducts reviews of residential plans and specifications for new construction, alterations and additions; ensure compliance with local, state and federal building codes and ordinances; prepare comments for each review using computerized plan review system when necessary. Each time revisions of plans are submitted, review new submittals to be sure revisions meet City Ordinance and code requirements;
- Maintains a cooperative working relationship with property owners, contractors, design professionals, city staff, and the public;
- Verifies quality of workmanship, quality of materials used, and compliance with plans, specifications, estimates and applicable codes and regulations; notes deficiencies and deviations from plans; interprets regulations, and issues stop work orders within scope of authority;
- Recommends changes or improvements in existing codes, regulations, policies and procedures

Education and/or Experience
The preferred candidate shall have prerequisite two-year associate degree in the related fields of engineering or construction, or a minimum of two (2) years of experience in building, construction, engineering or related field.
Knowledge Of
Standard office practices and procedures with strong computer skills; experience in residential, commercial, electrical, mechanical and plumbing construction.
Skill/Ability To
Effectively read, interpret, and apply manuals, inspect and evaluate conditions of construction sites; apply safety standard to prevent hazards; use mathematical calculations to estimate material quantities and project costs; develop, organize, motivate, and effectively utilize staff; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Valid Texas driver's license. International Code Council Certifications (residential) required or must be obtained within 6 months of date of hire. Plumbing Inspector License from the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners (TSBPE) must be obtained within 18-months of hire. Additional certifications upon employment, including (i.e.. Residential Plans Examiner, Residential Combination Inspector, etc.) may be required within a specified tim limit.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to engage moderate physical activity, work with tools and equipment, drive vehicles, perform repetitive motions, perform work involving the entire body, stand, and walk and balance on all types of surfaces. The employee is required to bend from the waist, crouch or squat, kneel, sit, crawl, climb, twist, and reach with arms and hands. The employee is required to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 30 pounds, such as materials and equipment, and must carry, push, and pull materials. The employee must be able to see clearly, with or without vision correction, in close situations, at a distance, and peripherally, and be able to adjust focus.

The work environment requires that the employee exercise caution at all times and adheres to safety standards to avoid the risk of personal injury. The work environment is noisy and distracting.
