Job Description

The role of the Trade Compliance Specialist is to collect, analyse and summarize information that will be used to determine the Export Control Classification Number (ECCN), Country of Origin, and Harmonized Tariff Schedule Number (Canada, U.S., China and Mexico) for HVAC and Refrigeration systems and parts. In addition to the classification determination, this role will be responsible for reviewing international shipment transactions against restricted parties. The position reports directly to the Assistant General Counsel, Global Trade Compliance with direction from the Global Trade Compliance team located in various countries.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES/KEY RESULT AREAS

  1. Understanding of Canada Export and Import regulations as it relates to import/export classifications, restricted parties, sanctions and embargoes.

  2. Becoming familiar with the Export Administration Requirements, and U.S. Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS).

  3. Following a predetermined series of steps within a process flow which includes researching and analysing data and making a series of decisions to come to a conclusion.

  4. Utilizing the company’s in-house ERP system, on-line document systems and the Internet to develop reports, research data to determine relevant facts on an item and enter import/export classification and country of origin information.

  5. Completing required forms and working with blue prints / drawings and specifications (technical knowledge is not a pre-requisite).

  6. Contacting suppliers, customers or other third parties for product information and business relationships.

  7. Coordinating with trade compliance, sourcing, suppliers, freight forwarders, and shipping and receiving to ensure all shipments are following import/export Compliance regulations and procedures.Maintaining documentation (emails, letters, files etc.) in support of the Canada Border Service Agency and other authorities record keeping requirements.

  8. Ensuring controlled technical data is kept secure and is accessed only by employees with the proper credentials.

  9. Performing research valuation analysis, corrective action planning, and respond to any third-party inquiries

  10. Reviewing and researching vendors and suppliers placed on hold to determine if they are an entity listed on one of the Canada Government’s restricted party lists. Releasing false positive holds in the Denied Parties Global Trade Compliance system.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Ability to work with employees at all levels of organization.

  • Candidate will need to possess strong organizational, analytical and motivational skills along withan ability to thrive in a fast-paced, metrics-driven, performance-based environment.

  • Experience in international trade, import/export regulations, Export Administration and International Traffic in Arms, dual use regulations.

  • Canada License Customs Broker or equivalent license or the ability to get it during the first 2 years on the job.

  • At least 5 years experiences in Canada, and International HTS Code classification.

  • Proficient with PC and MS Office Suite.

  • Fluent in English (written & verbal).

Preferred:

  • SAP and GTS Expertise.

  • Strong Project Management Experience.

  • Working experience in a manufacturing working environment.

  • Strong Customs Broker classification and shipments clearance experience.

  • French language skills
