The WKU String Academy seeks a pre-college instructor of violin to teach students ages 4 to 18 individual and group lessons. Lessons and classes are scheduled throughout the week during the Spring and Fall semesters (15 weeks each). The ideal candidate must be a strong performer with effective instructional skills, possess an ability to recruit and retain a vibrant studio of pre-college violinists, and have a willingness to develop and grow their teaching. This position includes potential summer festival teaching at the WKU String Academy.

The WKU String Academy is a preparatory program for violin and viola students housed at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, KY. It fosters an environment that is both nurturing and demanding, providing students with the opportunity to study a string instrument from the beginning to advanced levels. Solo recitals, group concerts, public performances, and master classes by world-renowned artists provide students with outstanding developmental opportunities. Our pedagogy is based around the principles of Shinichi Suzuki, with strong influences from Mimi Zweig and Paul Rolland.

Duties

  • Teach private lessons to students ages 4 to 18

  • Lead group classes for students ages 4 to 18

  • Participate in and attend student recitals

  • Communicate and work closely with WKU String Academy Director

  • Communicate clearly and effectively with student caregivers

  • Participate in local outreach and recruiting events

  • Stay updated with current trends and developments in string pedagogy

Potential opportunities

  • Work with a local non-profit musical outreach organization

    Job Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree in music performance or music education (violin or viola)

  • Training in pedagogy (registered Suzuki training, university-level courses, etc.)

  • Experience teaching applied violin lessons

  • Proficiency in violin or viola playing for performance and demonstration

    Additional Information:

Hourly Rate: $45-$60

Guaranteed 20 hours per week during the Fall and Spring semesters (15 weeks each) for the first year.
