Job Summary

We are seeking a dedicated Lab Assistant to join our dynamic research team specializing in lichen studies. This position plays a crucial role in supporting the day-to-day operations of our laboratory, focusing on the collection and analysis of lichen samples. This is a 9-month temporary position.

Who We Are

The University of Colorado Museum fosters exploration and appreciation of the natural environment and human cultures through research, teaching, and community outreach. We provide academic training for graduate students in Museum and Field Studies; build, conserve, and interpret research collections; and offer exhibits and educational programs for the University and the public.

The Museum is located on the main campus of the University of Colorado in Boulder, CO, and houses the largest natural history collection in the Rocky Mountains. Currently, more than four million objects are categorized into five disciplines: Anthropology, Botany, Entomology, Paleontology, and Zoology. The museum's Anthropology Section manages more than 1.5 million archaeological and ethnographic objects, and nearly 50,000 photographic images relevant to the Anthropology collections. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Sample Collection and Preparation: Carefully pool lichen of samples from various locations, ensuring the integrity and viability of each sample for further analysis.

  • DNA Extraction: Perform precise DNA extraction from lichen samples to prepare them for genetic analysis. This process requires attention to detail to ensure high-quality DNA yield.

  • PCR: Conduct PCR tests on extracted DNA to amplify specific DNA regions of interest. This task requires a solid understanding of PCR protocols and the ability to troubleshoot and optimize conditions for the best results.

  • Gel Electrophoresis: After PCR, run gel electrophoresis to verify the success of the amplification. This involves preparing the gel, loading samples, running the electrophoresis, and documenting the results.

  • Lab Maintenance: Maintain a clean and organized lab environment. This includes cleaning workspaces and equipment, disposing of waste materials properly, and ensuring that safety protocols are followed.

  • Reagent Preparation: Prepare and label reagents needed for all lab experiments. Maintain accurate records of reagent batches and storage conditions to ensure their efficacy.

What We Can Offer

  • This is a 9-month temporary job that pays $18/hour for 20 hours week.

What We Require

Educational Background:

  • Associate degree in Biology, Biochemistry, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and laboratory experience.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in DNA extraction techniques.

  • Experience conducting PCR and analyzing results.

  • Familiarity with gel electrophoresis procedures.

  • Basic knowledge of reagent preparation and handling.

Experience:

  • At least 1 year of laboratory experience, preferably in a research setting dealing with molecular biology or genetic studies.

  • Prior experience with sample collection and handling is an advantage.

Other Skills:

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in conducting experiments and recording data.

  • Ability to follow laboratory protocols and safety regulations strictly.

  • Good organizational skills to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and maintain a clean laboratory environment.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

  • Proficient in verbal and written communication.

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Physical Requirements:

  • Capable of performing physical tasks associated with standard laboratory work, including standing for extended periods and manual dexterity for precise work.

Certifications:

  • Completion of a laboratory safety course is highly desirable.

  • Experience in a biological research lab is preferred, particularly with skills in DNA extraction, PCR, and gel electrophoresis.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to follow complex instructions and maintain accurate records.
