Who We Are

The Institute for Behavioral Genetics (IBG) is an organized research unit of the University of Colorado Research and Innovation Office (https://www.colorado.edu/research/research-institutes) dedicated to conducting and facilitating research on the genetic and environmental bases of individual differences in behavior.

Founded in 1967, IBG is one of the top behavioral genetics research facilities in the world. Data collection and analysis are ongoing for several internationally renowned studies including the Colorado Adoption Project, the Colorado Twin Registry, the National Youth Survey Family Study, the Colorado Learning Disabilities Research Center, and the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. IBG is home to one of the nation's largest DNA repositories for research on human behavior, as well as housing a wide array of behaviorally and genetically defined lines of selected, recombinant inbred, transgenic, and knockout-gene mice. Researchers also use many large, publicly available whole-genome datasets such as the UK Biobank (https://www.ukbiobank.ac.uk/) , the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium (https://pgc.unc.edu/) , and the All Of Us (https://allofus.nih.gov/) datasets. Current research includes studies of aging, neurodegenerative disease, psychopathology, reading and learning disabilities, cognition, substance abuse, behavioral development, and evolution.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Management:

  • Manage and supervise all administrative staff. This currently consists of 3 University Staff positions.

  • Work with faculty and research personnel to ensure their research budgets are in order and their expenditures allocated appropriately.

  • Work with the Research and Space Committee to coordinate Institute construction and remodeling projects.

  • Coordinate financial and compliance aspects of events held at IBG, including IBG's Orientation and Poster Day and Mini-Conference events, Employee Appreciation events, weekly IBG journal Club and monthly First Friday Talks, student and faculty recruitment visits.

  • As the delegated IBG hiring authority, coordinate with the Graduate School, Human Resources, RIO and Employee Relations in resolving personnel issues.

  • Lead all aspects of all IBG grant applications. This includes meeting with applicants, working out an appropriate timeline with the coordination team and the Office of Contracts and Grants (OCG); providing guidance related to NIH and other federal policies and sponsors covering various grant mechanisms; and providing budgetary guidance in the preparation of proposal budgets.

  • Recommend and establish internal policies and procedures in accordance with University and funding agency guidelines.

Fiduciary:

  • Has delegated full signature authority for all fiduciary, administrative and research functions without prior approval by the Director. This includes: authorizing all petty cash withdrawals for subject payments as well as other types of subject payments; authorizing travel for all IBG employees and invited visitors; authorize At Risk spending accounts for funded sponsored projects to allow research continuity

  • Serve as Financial Manager for IBG. This includes exercising independence in the transfer of funds among IBG general funds, auxiliary and plant funds as needed; includes responsibility for all temporary and continuing budgets and the continuous oversight of all sponsored projects budgets to ensure compliance.

  • Prepare projections for sponsored research projects and work with the investigators to plan for optimal and appropriate usage of awarded funds.

  • Manage all general, auxiliary, and gift fund speedtypes including planning for payroll allocations.

  • Financial oversight of the IBG training program. This involves planning how to use training grant funds and improve training programs.

  • Approving authority for procurement cards and primary purchaser for large dollar requisitions. Provide guidance as purchasing authority for the Institute.

  • Prepare university budgets, as well as other statistical and financial reports for local, state and federal agencies.

  • Serve as the liaison between IBG and CCO, RIO, HR, and OCG for administrative reports and communications.

Leadership:

  • Contribute to the developing strategic goals and objectives by participating in short- and long-range planning. This includes advising the Director of short-term needs (as outlined in our yearly budget requests), as well as supporting long-range plans for IBG.

  • Provide support and counsel to the Director to establish Institute policies with long range implications considered.

This position offers a hybrid work modality with at least three days per week in the office.

What We Can Offer

The annual hiring range for this position is $91,300-$114,000. Onboarding assistance is available for eligible candidates.

What We Require

  • A bachelor's degree and two (2) years of professional work experience in general and/or research administration, including financial, HR, grant submission, and post-award management functions.

  • Ability to train and supervise staff, and to empower and maintain cohesive staff teams.
