The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado (CU) Boulder is seeking a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Program Manager! This role will support the CIRES DEI Director in shaping and promoting equity and diversity-based policies, partnerships, research, and critical initiatives that align with the CIRES vision and mission and scientific goals, and provide expertise to develop, implement, and achieve the goals of the Institute's DEI Strategic Plan. This position will promote and model a culture of positive engagement and continuous learning, both internally and externally, in efforts to increase knowledge, awareness, competency, and advocacy related to equity and diversity in the sciences.

This position is a member of the CIRES Administrative Team, which is responsible for leading and supporting the essential functions of the Institute. The CIRES DEI Program Manager will work in partnership with fellow CIRES administrative units, various DEI committees throughout the institute, the RIO Inter-Institute DEI Committee, and our external partners, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to support members of the CIRES community, with special focus on underrepresented groups in the sciences. The CIRES DEI Program Manager will support the CIRES DEI Director with evaluating the progress of the CIRES DEI Strategic Plan, and providing recommendations with regard to the effectiveness and impact of DEI programs, efforts, and interventions designed to engage our CIRES community.

This position will report to the CIRES DEI Director.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Program & Event Planning/Implementation (50%)

  • Support the CIRES DEI Director in the co-design and implementation of the following programs: CIRES Science Pathways Program, Equity-Focused Dialogic Skills Workshop Series, CIRES Community-Engaged Research Working Group, Society of Latinx/Hispanics in Earth and Space Science and Climate Resilience @ CIRES.

  • Proactively work with the CIRES DEI Director to co-design and manage events and training. These include but are not limited to:

  • CIRES DEI Guest Speaker series

  • Tribal Engagement seminars

  • CIRES DEI Trainings on Implicit Bias in the Workplace, Effective Bystander Practices and Developing Feedback Skills

  • Equity-focused Dialogic Skills Workshops

  • Inclusive Community of Practice meetings

  • Climate Caf and Climate action events

  • Ensure adherence to budget for each event and follow all department and campus procurement policies, as needed.

  • Plan and publicize event information to appropriate audiences, using department, college, campus-wide, and external communication channels as necessary. Manage the RSVP process.

  • Track event and programming attendance.

  • Actively collect feedback from participants, and work to adjust events and programs.

Program Evaluation (25%)

  • Design evaluation of CIRES DEI programs and events, actively collect feedback from participants and work to adjust programming.

  • Develop and maintain program evaluation activities aligned with the CIRES DEI Strategic Plan, by tracking demographic information, culture data, impact of organization-wide DEI activities, and online module engagement.

  • Track national trends and evidence-based strategies for integration into CIRES' diversity and inclusivity programs.

Communication & Departmental Support (25%)

  • Prepare the CIRES DEI Newsletter for distribution twice a month.

  • Work in close collaboration with CIRES HR to support and sustain inclusive hiring practices.

  • Maintain the upcoming "Climate Resilience @ CIRES" webpage by reviewing and posting resources submitted by CIRES employees.

  • Attend CIRES/NOAA DEI committee meetings, NOAA EEO trainings and campus DEI events.

What You Should Know

This position offers a hybrid work modality with a minimum of 3 days on-site per week.

The DEI Program Manager will be scheduled to work at the David Skaggs Research Center NOAA federal facility one day per week and/or will visit the site for trainings regularly. The selected candidate will be required to pass a federal background check for site access to the DSRC.

What We Can Offer

The annual hiring range for this position is $68,100-$85,000. Relocation is available for eligible candidates.

What We Require

  • Bachelor's degree and (3) three years of experience supporting DEI initiatives, such as leading interactive DEI workshops, collecting feedback and revising workshop content based on feedback. Related teaching experience can substitute.

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the degree and experience requirements.

What You Will Need

  • Ability to support DEI programs based on current research, including the recruitment and retention of all populations including historically underrepresented groups in the sciences.

  • Understanding of national DEI trends in diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.

  • Ability to understand the nuanced experiences and offer guidance regarding challenges faced by all populations including societal issues impacting historically underrepresented populations.

  • Dedication to the scientific mission and vision of CIRES, alongside a commitment to encouraging a diverse and inclusive culture.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking.

  • Strong project management and implementation skills.

  • Ability to self-direct without the need for day-to-day supervision.

  • Ability to manage CIRES DEI Program technical needs, using Google Suite and Microsoft Outlook tools.

  • Ability to balance multiple assignments and accomplish timelines; ability to pay attention to accuracy and detail while thinking broadly.

  • Ability to address sensitive issues with good judgment, compassion and discretion.
