Becoming a part of Optum Tech UnitedHealth Group Chief Digital Office (CDO) will give you the opportunity to just that. Serving all of UnitedHealth Group’s digital technology needs, the CDO team is responsible for driving outcomes across nearly 30 million+ human lives with UnitedHealthcare insurance, a number which puts UHC at the top of the pack as the largest managed care provider in the United States.

This team UHC Consumer Engineering, is transforming to meet the moment – to begin radically altering the way our customers engage with the healthcare system using modern tech to solve some of the most complex problems experienced along the way.

The team is focused on the UHC Conversational Experience (CVX) product, an asynchronous messaging platform connecting our consumers to virtual and human healthcare advocates for service and support, leveraging conversational AI.

Primary Responsibilities:

This role is a Lead Software Engineer for the UHC Conversational Experience Platform.

  • Delivery of software from at least 2 cross-functional/cross-component scrum teams, comprised of 4-6 people each

  • Leading and mentoring software engineers within the team

  • Interfacing with business partners to identify opportunities for better consumer experience

  • Partnering with stakeholders to understand business needs, technical solution, and implementation

  • Continuously looking for, suggesting, and implementing opportunities for process improvement

  • Engineering culture will be one of your core areas of focus, ensuring that our growing, and increasingly global, team adopts core competencies in DevOps, TDD, SRE, and beyond

  • Acting as the team’s Lead Engineer, when needed

  • Working with our US-Based Lead Engineer to fully understand the software solution and making meaningful contributions to its contours over time

  • Contribute to the evolution our system and defining the processes that deliver it.

  • Managing people while providing influence over multiple teams

  • Evangelizing modern technology to ensure our teams’ continued growth towards high performance

Required Qualifications:

  • 6+ years of broad technical knowledge - meaning you are not specialized in Java, Python, or any other coding. That knowledge spans the full stack, from deployment ops and database technologies through to front-end frameworks. Ideally, you have a deep understanding of both OOP and Functional stacks, Relational and NoSQL Data Stores, Streaming Applications, and system development/maintenance in the Public Cloud (Azure a bonus!)

  • 4+ years in Agile and Scrum. You know how to structure teams against a single backlog to avoid component specialization, and how to enable true CI/CD. You understand the role of an Engineering Manager in an Agile environment – where supporting the Product Owner’s organizational objectives and clearing roadblocks to accomplish them is paramount.

  • 4+ years leading/managing teams and know how to build a culture of appreciation and continuous peer feedback. You know what it takes to rally a team of SWEs to coalesce around a problem and deliver high quality software solutions. You take total ownership over problems, you will make sure the teams focus is where it needs to be, when it needs to be.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Data Science, Mathematics, other Engineering degree, IT, MIS, other technology related fields, or a specialized certificate in a technology related field

California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, or Washington Residents Only: The salary range for this role is $104,700 to $190,400 annually. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
