job summary:

Community health and multi-service center widely recognized as one of the most innovative community health centers in the country which is located in Dorchester MA is actively seeking (1) Laboratory Lead Technician to start within the next 2-3wks. This is a part-time position which will last for roughly 3-6 months to fill in for someone who will be out on leave. The working hours will be 20 hours/week evening 5:00pm - 9:00pm with an occasional Saturday shift once a month. The Lab Technician will be reporting to the Laboratory Manager, the Laboratory Lead Technician is responsible for diagnostic testing according to high quality standards, quality control procedures, equipment maintenance, calibration, linearity verification and general maintenance of the laboratory.

  • Laboratory Procedures

  • Perform diagnostic testing in various testing fields: hematology, chemistry, bacteriology, serology and urinalysis

  • Perform proficiency testing in the various testing fields as administered by an approved program

  • Perform calibration and systems verification procedure

  • Perform lab procedures, including instrument operation

  • Quality Assurance

  • Evaluate and solve problems related to specimen collection and processing

  • Follow National Patient Safety Goals when identifying and processing specimens for in-house or reference lab testing

  • Perform daily quality control

  • Monitor temperature controlled spaces

  • Advise medical staff on proper collection techniques and correct quantities for specimens

  • Recognize factors affecting testing procedure

  • Uses computers to manage data through input, storage and retrieval

  • Correlate data (clinical or technical) and monitor test results

  • Analyze QC data, make judgments concerning the results

  • Verify quality control procedures

  • Lab Maintenance

  • Maintain work areas in clean and orderly condition by following infection control procedures

  • Ensure proper disposal of contaminated and hazardous materials and specimens

  • Follow incident reporting system of CSHC when handling unusual incidents or circumstances, hazards and patient conditions to appropriate person

  • Instrument and equipment maintenance

  • Check inventory of laboratory supplies ensuring list of supplies to be ordered is made before supplies run out, purchase order policies are followed

  • Record shipments, catalogue and stock supplies according to manufacturer's requirements

  • Department Communication

  • Communicate and document Critical Alert Values (CAV) and other testing issues to licensed providers in a timely manner

  • Proper hand off communication is used to ensure smooth transition (e.g. communication log, pending list etc.)

  • Notify supervisor of out-of-control, discrepant or unexpected results within expected time frame

  • Answers inquiries about test results, specificity and sensitivity; answers questions about specific factors that can influence test results

  • Documentation

  • Maintain all laboratory documentation in a thorough, concurrent and efficient manner

  • Participate in QI, QA, PIC projects and data collection

  • Assist Supervisor

  • Write and revise technical procedure

  • Direct and guide work of technical and support personnel

  • Ensure reagents and supplies are monitored for inventory control

  • Implement new techniques and procedures with the direction of supervisor and assist with training and competency documentation


  • Knowledge of principles and procedures of Laboratory medicine and the operation and maintenance of Laboratory equipment generally acquired through completion of two years post high school training in an approved medical technology school to qualify as a Certified Laboratory Technician, MLT (ASCP) or equivalent, or HHS Certification, or has earned a Diploma (MT).

  • Work requires level of knowledge of principles and procedures of laboratory medicine generally acquired in six to twelve months of related experience.

  • Work requires interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients and allay apprehensions.

  • Work requires analytical abilities necessary to determine accuracy and precision of test methods and deviations from the norm.
