TOWN OF BOONE Police General Investigator in Boone, North Carolina

TheTown of Boone Police Department is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Police General Investigator.Performs difficult protective service work involving a variety of general or support duty police assignments in the Town of Boone and performs specialized and training assignments to provide support to a variety of departmental operations; serves as investigator for incidents assigned to the General Investigations Division. Work is performed under general supervision.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

  • Conducts initial and follow-up investigations of criminal, economic, special victim, and other criminal activities.
  • Conducts interviews with suspects, witnesses, and victims in connection with all investigated incidents.
  • Identifies, collects, and preserves physical evidence.
  • Assigned and responsible for being On-Call as scheduled by the investigations sergeant.
  • Prepares written reports of investigative activities.
  • Prepares case files and notes for the district attorney and court presentation.
  • Appears in court and provides testimony in relevant cases assuring the facts are presented professionally, accurately, and thoroughly
  • Develops contacts and information sources concerning criminal activity.
  • Investigates criminal activity that requires working with agencies across jurisdictions to identify suspects.
  • Directs police officers and trainees at crime scenes and major incidents.
  • Brings charges and makes arrests when probable cause has been established.
  • Performs all other tasks of a police officer.
  • Maintains vehicle, weapons and other equipment in standards working order.
  • Prepares and presents presentations to civic organizations for the police department.
  • Performs related duties as assigned or required in furtherance of the Boone Police Department's stated mission.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of state and federal laws, local ordinances and policies of the police department, especially relating to search and seizure, traffic control, pursuit, and arrest; Thorough knowledge of law enforcement principles, practices, methods and equipment; Thorough knowledge of relating to community policing concepts;

Some knowledge of scientific crime detection and criminal identification methods and procedures; Be self-motivated and task driven; Skill in the use of firearms and other police equipment and in the application of self-defense tactics; Skill in the operation of an automobile; Skill in problem solving and in relating to people of various ages, races and other demographic characteristics; Thorough knowledge and ability relating to supervisory functions, techniques, and skills; Ability to provide training and supervises the work of other officers as needed; Ability to build and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships and public relations with coworkers, supervisors, community leaders, and the general public; Ability to deal courteously, but firmly, with the public. Ability to act with sound judgment in routine and emergency situations; Ability to work calmly under conditions of high stress and physical and emotional fatigue; Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms; Ability to present effective court testimony; Ability to prepare clear and concise activity reports and to use the computer; Thorough knowledge of physical, economic, and social characteristics of the Town of Boone; Thorough knowledge of the methods of operating two-way communications systems; general knowledge of radio code systems; Thorough knowledge of the geography of the town and location of important buildings and landmarks; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

Education and Experience

:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school; must possess the applicable certification for Basic Law Enforcem nt Training, through the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.

Special Requirements

:

Must have at least three years of full-time police service; must have no more than one written reprimand within the last twelve months: Had no disciplinary suspensions within the last twelve months. Must meet and maintain all department and state training, experience and certification requirements for position; must possess a valid driver's license.

Salary:

$56,730, plus excellent benefits. Employee will serve a six-month probation. Town of Boone is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
