At our European Production and Research & Development site inBomlitz, GermanyDOW currently have an opportunity for aGlobal Application Technology Leader for Dow Construction Chemicals.

Dow Construction Chemicals is a leading global supplier of additives and formulations to the building and construction market including flooring, walls & components, roofing and pre-fabrication. Construction Chemicals is proposing solutions based on different chemistries (Cellulose ethers, acrylic emulsions, redispersible latex powders, silicone, polyurethane) to improve construction materials. This can range from cement or gypsum based mortars, protective coatings for various building materials’ surfaces like external façade and roofs or internal walls or floor protection. Dow Construction Chemicals is developing new innovative solutions to improve durability, appearance or ease of manufacturing of construction materials. In Europe, Dow Construction Chemicals operates R&D labs in Germany and Belgium. A network of labs at Dow sites around the world offer the opportunity to interact and collaborate with colleagues and customers globally.

Your responsibilities:

  • Define Value Proposition & Strategic Technical Direction– Define strategic direction for technology and develop business plan in partnership with marketing to move forward technical-market plan. Clearly communicate the value proposition versus risk profile with marketing to gain agreement from executive leadership is key to executing successful growth platforms. Lead development platforms/projects globally to bring forward new technologies and market arenas that deliver business growth.

  • Exploration– Identify and analyze technology-based, new market opportunities with regard to business potential for Dow Construction Chemicals to pursue M&A, Licensing, Strategic Alliances, and Joint Development agreements. Actively participate in the identification of new research or business opportunities through personal engagement in shaping of ideas and value creation.

  • Innovation / Technology Assessments– Lead assessment of emerging technologies and business models for new or adjacent markets. (technical feasibility, techno-economic cost/performance vs. best alternative technologies, intellectual property and technical differentiation value, lead piloting of new technologies in new applications under new business models, initiate customer and university joint-development programs etc).

  • Industry Leadership – Technology/Application SME. Develop and maintain relationships with internal and external technical partners in targeted market arenas. Maintain active current awareness of new technologies, market trends, patent and journal literature etc and identify and implement applications which will benefit Dow. Ensure robust connection with Universities, consultants, associations, etc. Provide in-depth technical expertise within the construction chemicals, particularly drymix technologies and innovation leadership to projects of regional or global scope. Generate scientific hypotheses that frame key questions associated with research projects and ensure that sound technical hypotheses are used by all team members.

  • Interpersonal and communications skills– Develop robust communication strategies and implement a range of effective communication methods that inform and influence within and across multiple organizations. Work cross-functionally with Legal department to manage Intellectual Property and secure freedom to practice and patent new technologies. Provide active technical mentoring and coaching to junior level scientists in the areas of technical and career development globally. Regularly leverage external contacts to enable Dow strategies and provide leadership to external organizations in order to develop credibility to influence.

Your main qualifications:

  • MS or PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, Civil Engineering or related field

  • Minimum 8-years’ experience for a PhD candidate or 11 years’ for a master candidate with minimum of 5 years’ experience in construction chemical industry with active customer interactions.

  • Broad knowledge of material science, formulation and polymers are required.

  • In addition to very good and fluent command of English, native in at least one main other European language and good computer skills is strongly requested.

  • Frequent European and global traveling is necessary (up to 50%) to meet with key customers in all regions, participate in trade shows, present at conferences, etc.

  • Successful track record of project leadership and new business growth

  • Ability to grow, maintain and leverage existing technical and functional expertise network

  • Technology leadership and strong business acumen capability to develop technical value propositions for solid innovation business cases with marketing for growth.

  • Externally customer-focused and drives business’ direction to understand end-use applications, technical needs, and championing innovation growth opportunities.

  • Outstanding communication skills and key stakeholder management skills globally

  • Highly passionate in leading and collaborating with people having various working styles

  • Quick learner for the new applications and technologies
