Summary Statement

Summer is almost here! Join our Parks and Recreation Department as a Swim Instructor at one of our four outdoor pool facilities.

  • Provide swim lessons to all levels and ages based on an established curriculum and program requirements

  • Open to all interested persons 16 years of age and older

  • Works a minimum of 20 hours per week

  • Must be available to work days, evenings, and weekends

  • Borah Pool

  • Fairmont Pool

  • Ivywild Pool

  • Natatorium Pool & Hydrotube

Essential Functions

Teaches basic swim strokes and skills to students in a group setting. Instructs and evaluates students. Oversees the safety of all class participants. Keeps and submits skills sheets/reports for each class participant. (100%)

Performs other duties as assigned. Nothing in this job description restricts management's right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this position at any time. Total Percentage = 100%

Requirements

Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training

Previous swim instructor experience. Certifications required as outlined below.

Ability to adapt teaching approach to students' ability level; communicate effectively and appropriately with participants (or their parents) about student's progress; interact with the public and co-workers in a friendly and professional manner; display an attitude of cooperation and work harmoniously with all levels of city employees, the general public and other organizations; communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; complete assignments in a timely fashion; understand and comply with all rules, policies, and regulations; maintain prompt and regular attendance; perform all essential and marginal functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation.

Licensing And Other Requirements

Must have current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification (or equivalent) and current Red Cross First Aid/CPR certification (or equivalent).

Applicants must be able to pass:

City of Boise background check processes which includes a criminal history check and reference checks in accordance with the City of Boise Hiring Process RegulationDrug Free Workplace: In accordance with the City of Boise Drug Free Workplace Regulation, this position is designated as safety sensitive and is subject to testing requirements including Post Offer Applicant Testing, Random Testing, Reasonable Suspicion, Post - Accident, etc. Applicants will be required to submit to screening for illegal drug use prior to hire. Appointment to this position is contingent upon a negative pre-employment drug test.

This position is required to perform emergency medical, lifesaving, and/or fire suppression activities.

Physical Efforts

While performing the duties of this job the employee is occasionally lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds. Also, the employee is occasionally pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds. The noise level is occasionally moderate. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, runn, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, climb and balance. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.

Working Environment

The work environment will include outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, in wet and humid conditions, areas of dust, odors, mist and gases or other airborne matter. Employees are exposed to mechanical hazards and work in/at heights. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position. Work includes protected exposure to infectious bacteria, bodily fluids and chemicals.

This position works: This position works: days, evenings and weekends throughout the summer, 25-40 hours per week.

19-Hour Temporary

All temporary part-time employees working less than an average of 19-hours per week are not currently eligible for benefits.

4-Month Temporary

All 4-month temporary employees working an average of 40-hours per week will accrue personal leave which can be used during employment.

8-Month Seasonal

In addition to accruing personal leave, anyone in an 8-month seasonal position working over an average of 30-hours per week is eligible for medical coverage.

9-Month Temporary

In addition to personal leave accrual and medical coverage, a position that is classified as a 9-month temporary is eligible for PERSI retirement benefits.
