POSITION GENERAL SUMMARY:

Develops, implements, and coordinates educational and outreach materials describing programs and services to the public; develops press releases and other media; presents educational materials to public groups, may serve as agency contact for media outlets. Creates, coordinates, schedules, and leads Barber Park natural resource education program for youth and schools.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The incumbent works under general direction and completes work assignments in accordance with instructions, policies, previous training, and accepted practices.

Essential Functions

  • Develops, presents, and distributes educational materials, publications, posters, brochures, and other written, visual, or electronically-based materials to the public and the media about programs and initiatives;

  • Develops, publishes, and maintains periodic documents and other media;

  • Maintains the agency’s internal and external websites and social media accounts;

  • Creates, develops, and finalizes content for internal and external reports;

  • Develops and manages the public outreach program, including educational event coordination, staffing, and transport;

  • Develops media archival system for internal retention and external promotion;

  • Creates and coordinates with a network of qualified natural resource educators to provide organized outdoor learning opportunities for youth and schools in Barber Park;

  • Plans and coordinates volunteer activities;

  • Prepares reports for Department Director and Parks, Open Space and Trails Advisory Board.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Designs and implements surveys to determine the satisfaction of community members, impact of outreach efforts, and to identify areas for improvement;

  • May work with management teams to research and act as point person for grant applications;

  • Performs related functions as required.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university in Public Relations, Journalism, Communications, Science, Education, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education or experience;

  • 2 years of experience delivering or presenting public information and/or education programs and materials;

  • Experience in web design and content production;

  • Working knowledge of MS Office, photo and video editing software;

  • Knowledge of social media;

  • Skill communicating effectively verbally and in writing;

  • Ability to compile data for reports and publications;

  • Ability to proofread and edit documents with a high degree of accuracy;

  • Ability to complete projects within deadlines;

  • Ability to work independently or with others to accomplish goals;

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Occasionally required to work nonstandard business hours, evenings, and weekends;

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license;

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Work is performed primarily in an office environment and the employee in this class is subject to inside environmental conditions;

  • Occasionally required to work in the field and be subject to various weather conditions;

  • Occasionally requires traversing rugged terrain and steep slopes;

  • Requires sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, to permit the employee to function in a general office environment and accomplish tasks.
