Summary This position is located within the Ambulatory Care and Processing (AC&P) department of Health Administrative Service (HAS) at the Boise VA Medical Center, Boise, ID. This position provides support to facility staff at the medical center, community-based outpatient clinics and expansion clinics. The incumbent is responsible for operating and maintaining a complete printing and binding office. Responsibilities Major duties include but not limited to: Reviews all print requests to determine and select appropriate equipment for the job. Maintains adequate supply of production materials, notifying appropriate personnel when procurement of additional materials is required. The incumbent monitors work orders from services for compliance with local and national policies and procedures and maintains accurate printing - duplicating records. Reviews work order requests for offset duplicating to ensure that requests are in compliance with established VACO and Medical Center policies and procedures. The incumbent monitors stock levels of all items required for station printing and bindery functions and orders as necessary. Maintains accurate production/utilization records for assigned equipment. The incumbent is to assist with all station policies, including all SOPs regarding the printing and duplicating processes. Reviews print requests to determine delivery date, type paper stock, color, and image position. Ensures material required is available, or on order. Prioritizes print orders to meet deadlines. Ensures efficient and effective use of equipment. Manages system resources, i.e. deleting or storing jobs, deleting files or folders no longer needed. Maintains the electronic file library. Responsible for the security of the system. Operates a computer workstation to receive and convert job order data into formats suitable for production runs on an electronic duplicating system. Utilizes network software, or downloads job orders from the internet, government web sites or local servers to capture information originated with a wide variety of work processing, graphics, and desktop publishing software packages. Stores images in system until ready for printing or repetitive print orders saved on the service drive for future retrieval and use. Selects system features and options required to complete the job according to specifications. Sets up appropriate controls for various enhancement features, e.g., screens. Sets up job specifications (i.e. stitching, single side, two sided, etc.) of documents according to customers print request. Work includes text, diagram, image and photo quality work in black and white and/or in color. Uses electronic work station using multiple types of software (word, publisher, adobe and proprietary software). Paper substrates used include but are not limited to; multi-weights of bond/text, card/cover, plastics, vinyl's, pressure sensitive, and perforated stocks. Stock sizes include 8 ½ to 12X20 coated and uncoated stocks Scans hard copies and determines page sequencing and special set-up requirements to select duplicating system settings and appropriate equipment for the job, i.e. single stitch dual stitch, tape binding multi-up, or signature booklet maker. Modifies electronic media as necessary to ensure the best product possible. Programs job specification into system and makes necessary adjustments based on quality of originals. Inspects sample output copies for quality, sequence and adherence to specifications of completed project. Completes production run as specified on print request and performs binding/finishing, if applicable. Ensures all print shop equipment is operational. Maintains equipment in peak operating condition by managing system resources. Performs daily and weekly maintenance functions in accordance with operating manuals and established procedures, e.g., cleans document glass, screen, and binder; replaces consumable supplies. Repairs/corrects routine mechanical problems and perform preventive maintenance service. Places calls and works with technical service representatives to report problems, seek solutions, and for repairs beyond area of expertise. The incumbent is also the primary contact for maintaining and troubleshooting the multi-functional copier machines facility wide. The incumbent is also called upon to provide backup support for telephone switchboard and mail room operations as required. You may qualify based on your experience as described below: Specialized Experience: I have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience that equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties the Duplicating Equipment Operator at the full performance level (GS-6), and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-5) in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience includes, but is not limited to: Knowledge of the operation of personal computers and/or workstations to include use of operating software and applications software packages, program capabilities, touch screen, mouse keyboard, storage and manipulation of information in memory. Knowledge of commands/codes and basic composition principles and techniques to create documents according to specification requirements. Knowledge and understanding of electronic work stations using multiple types of software (word, publisher, adobe and proprietary software) for creation, preparation, manipulation, retrieval and printing of forms, brochures, books, pamphlets, cards, handouts, small posters, shipping labels, instructional materials, letterhead and others. Knowledge and understanding to operate various printing/duplicating machines, including: punching and bindery attachment, Comb, Spiral, Fastback, multiple stapling functions, hole punching, jogger, booklet maker, folder, drill press, multiple pouch laminators, and table top cutters. Ability to identify the required types of paper substrate needed. Ability to operate the black and white printers, the digital color production printers with insertion trays, and the professional folders and finishers. Physical Requirements: Work requires extended periods of standing, bending, and carrying of moderately heavy materials and supplies. Occasionally may be required to lift heavy items (over 50 pounds), e.g., large boxes of paper and cartons of cards. Work environment: Work is performed in an adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated area. Employee handles toner, lubricants, cleaners, ink, etc. Special safety precautions are required. The operator is exposed to noises where other printing and printing-related operations are being performed. Hearing protection, safety glasses, and gloves are to be used as necessary. Back support is also to be used for heavy lifting. Moderate risks and discomforts occur from paper dust, machine noise, etc. Extra safety precautions are required when clearing jams from the finishing unit and fuser to avoid burns from extremely hot surfaces.
