Summary Statement

Boise Urban Garden School teaches youth and adults the fundamentals of gardening through science, nutrition, and environmental-based lesson plans and activities.

Culinary Instructor:

  • Instructs students in a culinary and cooking class following an instructor-created curriculum.

  • Work is performed in a class setting.

  • This position is designated as At-Will.

Essential Functions

Instructs students in culinary classes. Ensures the well-being of participants enrolled in program. Works with supervisor to develop and implement an appropriate class curriculum. (70%)

Prepares material and supplies for class. Ensures equipment and supplies are in good working order and notifies supervisor when items need repair or replacement. Maintains rosters and attendance sheets for duration of class. (30%)

Performs other duties as assigned. Nothing in this job description restricts management's right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this position at any time. Total Percentage = 100%

Requirements

Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training

One year culinary experience.

Working knowledge of effective instructional techniques.

Ability to deal with children, adults, and coworkers in a friendly and tactful manner; work varied hours including evenings and weekends; display an attitude of cooperation and work harmoniously with all levels of City employees, the general public and other organizations; communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; complete assignments in a timely fashion; understand and comply with all rules, policies and regulations; maintain prompt and regular attendance; perform all essential and marginal functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training

Two years of experience working in a class setting with students of all ages from various cultural and economic backgrounds in a specific area such as dance, arts and crafts, mountain biking, martial arts, drama, ecology, etc. following an instructor-created curriculum.

Culinary certification.

Appointment to this position is contingent upon a negative pre-employment drug test.

Physical Efforts

While performing the duties of this job the employee is occasionally lifting/carrying up to 20 pounds. Also, the employee is occasionally pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds. The noise level is occasionally moderate. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear, smell and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, reach and grasp. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.

Working Environment

The work environment will include inside conditions.

19-Hour Temporary

All temporary part-time employees working less than an average of 19-hours per week are not currently eligible for benefits.

4-Month Temporary

All 4-month temporary employees working an average of 40-hours per week will accrue personal leave which can be used during employment.

8-Month Seasonal

In addition to accruing personal leave, anyone in an 8-month seasonal position working over an average of 30-hours per week is eligible for medical coverage.

9-Month Temporary

In addition to personal leave accrual and medical coverage, a position that is classified as a 9-month temporary is eligible for PERSI retirement benefits.
