SEAGATE TECHNOLOGY (NRM) Recording Head Physicist - Staff Engineer in Bloomington, Minnesota

About our group: Advanced Transducer Development (ATD) is responsible for developing recording head technology for Seagate's HDD (Hard Disk Drive) products being introduced in 4+ years. The Recording Physics & Metrology group is responsible for providing best-in-class test (capability, application, and analysis) in support of ATD's mission. About the role - you will: Provide expert lab-level characterization of advanced recording head designs, primarily through the use of a state-of-the-art engineering-level wafer probe system Work with designers to detail the ways in which new designs achieve or fail to meet design intent Provide insight into areal density limiters, reliability failure modes and underlying electrical, magnetic, optical, and thermomechanical mechanisms at play Evaluate head performance via short loops and wafer test structures to shorten time-to-learning and isolate device behaviors Understand head performance in the context of the recording subsystem, including media, channel, preamplifier, and interconnect, highlighting important interactions, based on these assessments, provide actionable recommendations for design and process improvements, championing these recommendations as necessary to get the appropriate organizational traction Write software to develop novel test methods Use, and help develop if needed, additional static and dynamic test capability that will support our mission Contribute to Seagate's IP portfolio in the form of invention disclosures, patents, trade secrets, peer-reviewed journal articles, and/or white papers About you: You are an innovative and self-motivated worker with an insatiable curiosity You have excellent verbal and written communication skills You have a reputation for honesty, integrity, showing respect toward others, and effectively collaborating within a diverse team You earn the technical respect of peers and can effectively influence technical decisions You can provide effective project team leadership Your experience includes: Expertise in nano device physics including magnetics, optics, plasmonics, heat transfer, and electronics Lab experimentation including proficiency with lab test electronics and data collection software environments Experience with wafer level metrology including electrical, optical, and/or magnetic characterization Knowledge of the standard application of hypothesis testing and statistics in data analysis Expertise in thin film materials characterization techniques and other forms of nano-device metrology and testing Test module development with Python, MATLAB, or other similar languages/environments Bachelor's Degree in Engineering related field (i., e Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Computer Engineering, Materials, Physics, or Information Technology) and 8+ years of experience or master's degree in the same and 5+ years' experience or PhD and 3+ years' experience or equivalent experience and education. You might also have: A track record of developing and using advanced magnetic recording techniques to characterize recording subsystems including the head, media, preamp, and channel A working knowledge of communication systems, signal processing, RF signal transmission, servo systems, and dynamic head-disk clearance management Location: Our Normandale campus spans two suburbs, Edina, and Bloomington, and serves as the Recording Head development and manufacturing arm of Seagate.
