Job Summary

Provides spiritual/pastoral care and spiritual ministries programming for residents, residents’ family members and employees. Supports the organization's mission and vision by providing spiritual care, including individual pastoral care, for all residents and residents' family members to address resident's spiritual needs, including those with varying levels of dementia. Administers and coordinates the administration of sacraments. Helps ensure appropriate worship and Bible study opportunities are available to all residents. Helps ensure development of and participates in the spiritual life programming. Demonstrates ability to minister to people of diverse faith traditions, displaying respect for cultural diversity. Invites and encourages employees to participate in the spiritual life of the location, and encourages, trains and empowers them in their providing spiritual care. Is available to staff for pastoral care as needed and refers to appropriate resources. Documents visits and care provided to residents. Works collaboratively with others in ensuring the meeting of residents' spiritual needs.

Educates internal and external healthcare groups on spiritual and religious care and responsibilities of chaplains. Networks with community clergy and other faith leaders as needed. Serves as a member of the interdisciplinary team, collaborating with other members to develop and provide spiritual support to residents, patients, clients, families and staff.

Serves to support, teach, and mentor peers and students when appropriate and requested. When requested, provides spiritual leadership at organizational events such as memorial services, dedications and public events. Manages complex and challenging cases by consulting with interdisciplinary team.

Follows the Association of Professional Chaplains Code of Professional Ethics. Addresses the spiritual care referrals and consults in a timely manner. Follows spiritual ministries policies and procedures. Demonstrates critical thinking skills under adverse situations in order to respond appropriately to residents, patients, clients and families. Possesses awareness of personal biases and demonstrates the ability to set them aside while at work. Possesses ability to establish and maintain effective professional relationships. Exhibits initiative with events. Provides leadership qualities when necessary. Participates in staff meetings as scheduled. Depending on location, may be required to serve on call as assigned.

Qualifications

Graduate of an accredited School of Theology with the Association of Theological Schools (seminary or equivalent) with a Master of Divinity or a Master of Theology degree strongly preferred.

Completion of two units of Clinical Pastoral Education or being certified or credentialed as a chaplain, along with being endorsed or affirmed for this ministry by denomination is preferred.

One Unit = 400 hours, 300 clinical ministry, 100 group experience under supervision of certified supervisor of CPE program.

Previous and extensive pastoral experience preferred.

Must be an active member in good standing of a Christian denomination per Good Samaritan Society’s "A Description of Being Christian in the Lutheran Tradition.”

Required to be ordained, licensed or commissioned to function in a religious vocation by an appropriate religious authority. Must provide written verification of ordination, licensed or commissioned status prior to being hired.
