Our Transportation business within P&PS Europe currently comprises 1400 staff spread across 23 offices, delivering more connected, sustainable solutions for our UK, European and international clients across Aviation, Highways, Rail, and adjacency markets.

The purpose of the role is to provide leadership to the Bridges and Structures team in our Birmingham office. You will be a focal point for the team, acting as a local figurehead for our Bridges and Structures people in that office, ensuring that there is a clear, visible connection between the wider Bridges and Structures Solutions Group and the local office team.

A key aspect of the role is looking after our people. This means being a role model in understanding culture, people issues and local morale and encouraging behaviours that mean the most to us. The role is also key to running our business and ensuring that the team contribution to the Business Plan is achieved.

In addition to your people leadership role, you will also be responsible for project delivery. Our Bridges and Structures Capability is part of our wider Transportation business. We take pride in delivering technically complex schemes across the UK and internationally. As a key member of our team, you will support our transition to a solutions provider, transforming how we deliver through the implementation of new technologies and lean, digital processes, to increase efficiency and add value for our clients.

The following accountabilities and expectations apply to the role of Team Lead:

Accountabilities of the role:

As a Team Lead, you will support the Bridges & Structures Leadership Team on the following key areas:

  • Growth and winning work – From both existing and new Clients

  • Delivering for our clients – Ensuring project delivery excellence and standardisation, championing our culture and contributing to risk management.

  • Looking after our people – Creating a positive, inclusive environment where all feel belonging, is safe, supportive and enjoyable. Facilitating effective communication, supporting line management, demonstrating visible leadership on Health, Safety and Environment and being accountable for the training and development of the team.

  • Running our business – Resourcing, retention and recruitment, salary review and promotions and effective management of our investment budget.

Further, you will:

  • Work in partnership with your Head of Capability and People Leaders to achieve our culture vision

  • Providing visible and proactive leadership to the local team, be the go to person for the team and the local point of contact for other local teams

  • Achieving team contribution to the Business Plan

  • Driving office attendance through creative initiatives

  • Communication with the team including regular office-based team briefings

  • Supporting and performance management of team People Leaders

  • Local recruitment in line with the Bridges and Structures Solutions Group recruitment plan and contribution to strategic long-term resource planningTeam promotions and salary reviews

  • Ensuring adequate project delivery supervision for team membersProactively raising any people or project issues to your Head of Capability

  • Competency management and development, including support to our Global Integrated Delivery approach, succession planning

  • Identify training and development requirements for the team and leading on implementation

  • Make business and group messaging relevant to the local team, improving engagement and compliance

The Team Lead Role

The Team Lead is an essential member of the Bridges & Structures capability. As the Team Lead you will actively collaborate with the Bridges and Structures Senior Leadership Team (Capability Director, Heads of Capability, Technical Lead) and also with other Team Leads, Resourcing Leads and People Leaders.

People leadership is an important aspect of the role. You will represent your Bridges and Structures office team and be visible and approachable to them, actively promoting your people and our business with pride.

Further, with a strong focus on project delivery, you will be expected to undertake the role of technical/discipline lead on a range of bridge and structural related projects:

  • Lead and mentor teams on tasks such as structural analysis, feasibility studies, tender designs, detailed designs and the production of contract documents and technical reports.

  • Use your knowledge and skills to lead a team and other disciplines in providing an integrated service to clients.

  • Proactively identifying and implementing innovative solutions through leveraging data, automation, lean and standardisation to improve efficiency/productivity and project outcomes.

  • Project delivery excellence, commercial or technical, or both depending on role (i.e. delivery to time, budget and quality)

  • Work with our UK and Global Integrated Delivery teams to best use our resources and ensure efficient and successful delivery.

As part of the Team Lead role you will be expected to be deployed on related project work for at least 90% of your time (reduced for part time team members). For that, we would expect the following qualifications and experience:

  • A professional qualification

  • Project management and leadership skills related to bridge design (or other disciplines)You may have a background in bridge engineering, however, we are equally interested to hear from candidates from other disciplines and industries.
