Guthrie Histology Technician - Histology - Full Time in Binghamton, New York
This position is eligible for up to a $10,000 sign-on bonus!
Position Summary: Prepares and stains microscopic tissue slides from surgical and autopsy specimens for microscopic examination by pathologist to render diagnosis. This includes various specialized techniques and staining procedures. Has some indirect supervision of processors working in laboratory.
Education, License & Cert: High school graduate or equivalent, and college sciences that would qualify person for certification as a histotechnician by the Board of Registry (ASCP) or HT (ASCP) eligible. Experience: Previous experience working as a histotechnician is preferred but not required.
Essential Functions: 1. Ensures tissue specimens received are properly preserved at all points in the preparation process.
Assists pathologist or pathologists’ assistant with gross dissection and processing of specimen.
Assists with the preparation of frozen sections.
Embeds tissue sample in paraffin block exercising appropriate independent judgment in relationship to orientation of specimen.
Identifies normal tissue components and relationships as well as abnormal lesions in order to place specimen in proper position for sectioning.
Cuts tissue paraffin blocks on microtome with proper positioning on slides. The ability to recognize variation in tissue specimen components and to modify techniques in sectioning for each type of tissue to achieve acceptable sections is essential. Sections are placed on microscopic slides preferably without artifacts.
Maintains and monitors automatic slide stainer and its solutions to ensure proper staining of slides.
Maintains inventory of histology supplies. Appropriately handling, storage and disposal of all chemical and other supplies.
Maintains work and log sheets of patient and tissue specimen information, documenting appropriate controls and quality control.
Assists with Pathology cutting room duties.
Maintains block and slide storage and retrieves blocks or slides as needed.
Assists with special send outs for specialized testing.
Performs other duties as assigned, to include but not limited to typing, filing, answering telephones, and other duties as assigned
Other Duties: Competencies 1. Demonstrates age specific competencies as per department standards. 2. Demonstrates clinical and technical competencies as per department standards.
The pay range for this position is $23.90 - $37.88/hr
