Whether in a direct-care or support role, your contribution will make a difference in the life of a Texan.The Cook II works in the Food Service Department working the evening shift.The Cook II performs routine (journey-level) food preparation work. Work involves preparing, seasoning, and cooking food; developing and preparing modified diets; and maintaining inventories and records of food consumption. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.Essential Job FunctionsAttends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.1. Prepares, seasons, and cooksand#146; food according to menus, specials dietary or nutritional restrictions, or established standards.2. Cleans and inspects food preparation equipment, kitchen appliances, and work areas to ensure sanitary conditions.3. Reports kitchen equipment in need of repair or replacement.4. Ensures that food is maintained at proper serving temperatures.5. Sets up serving lines and serves food as appropriate.6. Assists in test and standardizing recipes.7. Assists in maintaining an inventory of supplies and preparing requisitions for needed items.8. May assist in reviewing and planning menus to determine types and qualities of food to be prepared.Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agencyand#146;s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.Registrations, Licensure Requirements or CertificationsMust possess valid Texas driverand#146;s license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date. Applicants with an out-of-state driverand#146;s license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.Knowledge Skills Abilities1. Knowledge of food preparation methods, of food storage standards and sanitation regulations.2. Skill in the operation and sanitizing of food service equipment.3. Ability to prepare and serve food, to clean dining, serving, and food preparation areas, and to maintain accurate records.4. Ability to speak and read English.5. Ability to follow written and oral instructions.6. Ability to complete basic math used in cooking/preparation.7. Ability to stand/ walk on hard floors for extended period of time.8. Ability to work in hot and/or cold conditions.9.
