Duties: vegetables and melons, including, but not limited to, sweet corn, pumpkins, broccoli, and cauliflower. This job requires a minimum of 3 months of verifiable prior experience working on a vegetable/melon farm handling both machine and manual tasks associated with commodity production and harvest activities. Workers must be able to safely perform all duties, manual as well as mechanized, with accuracy and efficiency. Plants, cultivates, harvests and packs vegetables. Works on planter, plants roots, seeds, and bulbs. Workers may spread or remove plastic or other groundcovering and drip tape from fields. Weeds, thins, plants. Transplants plants, riding on transplanter or by hand. May set poles and wires for vine plants. Workers must also stake/tie plants. Workers will trellis and prune plants. Picks, cuts, lifts, or pulls crops to harvest them. May tie vegetables in bunches or top them. Considerable stooping and kneeling is required. Care must be taken to prevent damaging produce and plants. May assist with irrigation; apply agricultural chemicals: herbicides and insecticides and applying fertilizer. May operate and help maintain tractors or hand-operated equipment. Clear debris from field and clean/maintain farm buildings, structures, equipment, and work areas. Assist with farm and field maintenance and repairs. Work is to be done in the field for long periods of time. Workers are expected to perform duties including grading, boxing, weighing and loading of produce. Workers may assist in loading trucks with produce weighing from 50 to 60 pounds and lifting to a height of 5 feet. Workers should be able to work on their feet in bent positions for long periods of time. Work requires repetitive movements and extensive walking Allergies to ragweed, goldenrod, honey bees, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, or related chemicals may affect a worker's ability to perform the job. Work required in fields when plants are wet with dew and rain, and may be required during light rain, snow, moderate winds, direct sun, high humidity and extreme temperatures. Temperatures in fields may range from 10 to 100 F. Workers may be required to work during occasional showers not severe enough to stop field operations. Workers should be physically able to do the work required with or without reasonable accommodations. Saturday work required. Must be able to lift/carry 60 lbs. Extensive pushing or pulling, Extensive sitting or walking, frequent stooping or bending over. Work may also include mechanized field work using power equipment. By way of example and not limitation power equipment may include tractors, planters, sprayers, cultivators and other farm and packing house equipment. Workers will be expected to be able to operate agricultural equipment with or without direction. Work is performed as a member of a crew under close supervision of a field supervisor. Instructions and general supervision will be provided by a designated lead worker or company supervisor. Vegetable workers will be expected to perform their duties in a timely and proficient manner without close supervision. All workers harvesting vegetables will be expected to work at a comparable rate of speed. Supervisor(s) will provide instructions and directions to workers. Workers must be able to comprehend and follow instructions and communicate effectively to supervisors. Unusual, complex or non-routine activities will be supervised. Workers expected to perform basic duties in a timely and proficient manner without close supervision. Worker must operate equipment, with or without direction, in a manner that protects operator, visitors, other workers, products, trees, crops and equipment. Failure to comply with safety requirements and operating instructions may result in termination. Tobacco use strictly prohibited. No smoking or tobacco use of any kind permitted in the fields, worker housing, or anywhere on company premises.
