Why this job matters

This job is required to manage data using a database management system (DBMS) and database administration to assure the proper usage and deployments of the BT Group and Technology data and databases. The Third line DBA team support all Oracle Databases and associated components that form the teams deigned supported estate. Also, ensure database integrity is maintained and database access is secured.

What you’ll be doing

  • Ensure that all services are delivered within the framework of BT core values and in line with BT Policies and Procedures.

  • Contribute to the recruitment, appointment and induction of DBA Team.

  • Manage and support DBA Teams in line with Policies and Procedures, including supervision, absence management, disciplinary and grievance issues.

  • Promote and support effective team working through good communication and regular team meetings.

  • Identify individual and team learning and development needs and plan to meet these in conjunction with learning and development staff.

  • Provide Technical Guidance to Senior Managers and Delivery Units on ‘Best Practice’ with regard to the delivery of Oracle database products and services.

  • Able to support, coach and motivate a technical teams in the delivery of secure and robust Oracle database products and services.

  • When required contribute to 3rd Line support of all Oracle Databases and associated components that form the team’s defined supported estate

  • Responsible for Design and Delivery of systems ensuring the availability and reliability of Technology /Group database systems with the highest possible level of business criticality where issues can affect the business ability to trade, cash flow and ultimately could be share price affecting.

  • Under Service Obsession Initiative, contribute to EOSL by managing the removal of legacy databases and systems. In addition improve system reliability and NFMI maturity ratings that are attributed to the database deliverable.

  • Able to provide assessment of Incident and Change records that impact database with a skill set capable of contributing to RCA and if database related take ownership to improve service.

  • Ensure database integrity standards are maintained and database access is secured.

  • Responsible for continuous improvement, striving to improve process and automation of all aspects of database deliverable.

Capabilities required for the job

  • Oracle DBA Administrator: Strong skills in Oracle DBA and a learning acumen for new database related technology preferably in latest versions.

  • BT Business Leader: Understanding of BT Line of business and how important it is to continue supporting the SLA’s needed and agreed as per our standards.

  • Team coach – Leading a team of UK and India based DBA for several years and being able to motivate and align the team expectations with BT Vision.

  • Issue management - You research and recommend solutions to resolve routine problems. You escalate complex or unexpected issues as needed.

  • Improvement focus - You question and challenge the way things are done and work with others to make improvements. You build your understanding of the end to end processes to which your own role and the wider team contributes.

  • Product and service knowledge - You continuously build your understanding of infrastructure, products, services and complex offerings. You share knowledge with your team and tailor solutions to meet the unique needs of the customer.

  • Software development - You write basic code. You develop and test complex or non-routine digital software and platforms to make sure they meet design requirements.

  • Technology excellence - You develop and consider new ways of using technology to meet customer and business needs. You explain this to others in straightforward language.

  • Testing and quality assurance - You perform rigorous, complex testing and inspections to evaluate quality and performance. You discuss the results with your team.

  • Give specialised advice - You offer advice and recommendations based on your expertise both proactively and on request.

  • Change management is fundamental if we are to achieve a consistent, high performing service. Follow Change management process to protect BT services by supporting and controlling the enhancement, modification, removal or movement of any of the components that make up the IT estate - that is managed and/or supported by the Technology group.

  • Communication & Collaboration - Provide consultancy and guidance to deliveries and applications, using own technical expertise to reduce database delivery cycle time and improve stability of business applications.
