VMware Cloud Native Software Engineer in Beijing, China

Cluster-api team is seeking a software engineer to help advance our mission of making cluster-api the best software to operationalize Kubernetes for multi-cloud enterprises and service providers. You have the opportunity not only to contribute to a product that has a direct impact on enterprise customers, but also work closely with the Kubernetes cluster-api community. If you are passionate about solving challenging problems in order for customers to run their applications at scale on private and public clouds, this is the opportunity for you.

What is the primary need, technical challenge, and/or problem you will be responsible for?

We need someone who knows Kubernetes, AWS or Azure public clouds to work with the team to solve challenging problems on cluster-api and cluster-api providers including cluster-api-provider-aws{azure, vsphere}, and deliver critical production capabilities such as high availability, auto-scaling, health-checks, as well as self-healing and rolling upgrades for Kubernetes clusters. In the meantime, you are also responsible for how to easily customize Kubernetes and simplify deployment and operation of Kubernetes clusters.

Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

You will be expected to produce software designs (Golang, Shell) and drive the open-source community to step forward to support long term extensibility of code, as well as high quality and well-documented code in an automated CI and Test environment. You enjoy researching and developing cutting edge cloud-native software, you participate in the open source community and you thrive in technically leading initiatives. You believe in agile software development methodologies, you take ownership of your code and believe in test driven development. You are passionate about understanding customer needs and give priority in delivering the highest quality code. You work closely with support engineers to solve critical customer issues and community issues.

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

As one of the MAMBG Engineers, you will:

  • Run Kubernetes on vSphere, Azure and AWS

  • Design and implement new features of cluster-api to better run and customize Kubernetes

  • Improve cpai, capv, capz and capa overall reliability, scalability and ease of use

  • Work with Global Support and Service team to support customer cases

  • Work with the open-source community to make cluster-api stronger and popular

  • Improve stability and test coverage of CI/CD pipelines

What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

The hiring manager for this role is Yanzhao Li, Engineering Manager R&D. Yanzhao has worked on cloud native for VMware for more than 4 years. Prior to VMware, Yanzhao was an Assistant Researcher focusing on Linux kernel for the Institute of Information Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences .

Yanzhao currently leads our Tanzu Kubernetes Grid Integrated Edition (TKGI) which consists of around 12 engineers focused on Kubernetes lifecycle management on private and public cloud, and also the cluster-api team for TKG.
