Department Summary:

MITRE's Network Architecture, Security and Data Analytics department (L116), part of the Networking and Infrastructure Innovation Center, is seeking a Group Leader to join our leadership team. Our department is a multi-disciplinary organization with engineers and scientists focused on areas such as networking, security, and data science and the intersection of those fields across domains. The selected candidate will be part of leading a talented team supporting a wide range of impactful sponsors and research activities while actively helping to shape the department and greater L110’s strategic direction and leading key initiatives to help make the strategy become a reality. The group leader will spend 10% of their time devoted to this first-line supervisory role and the remainder of their time as a team member or leader on projects associated with the department’s and division’s competencies and capabilities.

Roles & Responsibilities:

A successful candidate will work closely with the Department Manager and other Group Leaders to grow technical capabilities through targeted recruiting, work program development, and further strengthening of the department’s research program. The candidate will be expected to select a broad technological focus area and assist the department in growing expertise and work in that area as well as engaging with experts both inside and outside of MITRE. The Group Leader will be an active participant in department business operations, strategic engagement with portfolios and project leaders, and mentoring of staff. As an innovation center department, this is an outstanding opportunity to work across multiple sponsors and to mentor staff working across multiple technical disciplines in infrastructure, networking and data science. Group leaders have a substantial voice in operating the department and opinions are strongly valued.

Key functions of the position:

Department and Team Engagement:

• Serve as the direct supervisor (DS) for 8-10 assigned team members, including conducting regular performance and development conversations with group members, engaging with work leaders for feedback, participating in assessment, promotion, and salary discussions for team members, assistance in team member goal development.

• Serve as an advocate for 8-10 assigned team members to the department, division and greater MITRE, providing upward feedback, addressing concerns and furthering opportunities through work programs, training, research and department activities

• Provide mentorship and coaching to team members across the department to increase engineering stature and opportunities for professional growth.

• Contribute to finding work opportunities that support team member’s personal goals, department and division goals, and sponsor outcome priorities.

Recruiting and Hiring:

• Play an active role in the department recruiting and hiring process including external engagement with universities to attract talent, networking to identify targeted hires, screening of resumes, attending candidate presentations, and conducting technical interviews.

External and Internal Engagement:

• Significant engagement with Project Leaders and Task Leaders to cultivate new opportunities, to match the right engineering talent to outcomes, and to ensure high technical quality deliveries.

• Proactively work across MITRE to develop new work opportunities and drive development of new technical capabilities for the department/division.

Department Strategy

• Active leader in developing and implementing department strategy to grow capabilities in network technology and security, improve department technical stature, develop new work opportunities, and streamline business processes.

• Communicate strategy to group members and encourage active engagement to meet strategic objectives.

Basic Qualifications:

• Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.

• Strong verbal and written communications skills and the ability to communicate effectively to a variety of audiences across MITRE. Excellent interpersonal skills, judgement, discretion, diplomacy, tact, and ability to work with both staff and internal/external sponsors.

• Technical domain knowledge in one of the following areas: networking, network security, cloud engineering, data science, cybersecurity, or related disciplines.

• Demonstrated ability to engage with staff to develop data, analysis, strategies, actions, and measures required to address issues, solve problems, meet strategic objectives, and advance short and long-term performance and development goals.

• Strong desire to engage broadly across MITRE and with external organizations to help achieve strategic objectives.

• Active Secret or TS Clearance

This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site

Preferred Qualifications:

• BS or MS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent field of study.

• 2 years prior experience in a leadership role

• Passion for personnel leadership/management.

• Ability to use discretion, compassion, and creative approaches to solve problems, remove barriers, and work constructively through conflict.

• Ability and commitment to work closely and collaboratively with a diverse team of MITRE leaders, managers, and partners to sustain a high-performance team (e.g., attend and contribute to team meetings, maintain effective communication with leaders and other team members, complete ad-hoc tasks from time to time based on emerging operational needs, etc.).

• Experience proposing and executing independent research activities.
