About This Role:

The Academic Advisor / Student Support Specialist is a full-time professional staff position that is responsible for advising and providing academic support for students in the Texas Academy at

Lamar University. This includes developing student class schedules, maintaining education records such as transcripts, mentoring and coaching high school students, facilitating end of course exams, and serving in an advisory role for Texas Academy students. This position reports to the Dean of the Honors College / Director of the Texas Academy and will collaborate across campus with academic, enrollment management, and student service departments, faculty, staff, and students, as needed.

What You’ll Do – Position Responsibilities:

  • Provides advising to students and consultation and guidance to parents, faculty, and administrators regarding academic matters.

  • Meets with students on a daily basis to process requests for registrations, registration changes, and other issues related to the academic policies and procedures of the Honors College and Texas Academy.

  • Counsels’ students who find it necessary to leave the university and/or are experiencing difficulties in their academic pathway.

  • Tracks students throughout their academic careers to promote academic progress; provides progress reports and semesterly reports (such as GPA reports, transcripts and other necessary reports) to the Dean;

  • Manages records and keeps a database of advisement and retention of records and communications directly with professors of record as it relates to student academics.

  • Assists with the planning and execution of new student orientation and student engagement programs, to include serving as an advisor to clubs or committees.

  • Develops a timeline and plans for mental and emotional well-being for students who are minors transitioning to the college experience.

  • Assists with registration of incoming, first-year students.

  • Utilizes EAB Navigate and other internal tracking systems for appointments, communication, and reporting.

  • Assists with marketing the Texas Academy and their programs and services.

  • Assists with assessing, evaluating, and growing programs.

  • Participates in professional development, as needed.

  • Performs other duties, as requested.

  • Consults with Texas Academy team to assist students through the transition from Texas Academy to an institution of higher education.

  • Assists with Community Meetings and advises the Texas Academy SGA , as needed.

  • Serves as district testing coordinator and manages and handles all aspects of end of course ( EOC ) exams; PSAT exams, to include ordering and labeling materials, etc.

  • Provides guidance and holds workshops for students as they transition to LU and other colleges in terms of admissions requirements, applications, etc.

Key Competencies:

  • Knowledge of student success best practices in academic advising and student development

  • Superior oral/written communication skills

  • Computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft applications.

  • High level organization, strong attention to detail, and interpersonal skills

  • Familiarity/knowledge of TEA regulations and graduation requirements

  • Understanding of University advising practices to meet students’ needs.

  • Demonstrated ability to participate in a highly collaborative work environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with individuals from various backgrounds.

  • Ability to represent Lamar University with high levels of professionalism

    Physical Requirements:

  • Lift up to 15lbs; work at computer; work travel required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three years of experience within an academic setting, advising, data collection and analysis

  • Previous experience (1-3 years) in academic advising, student support role, or related area at the high school level
