Job Summary/Basic Function

About the Role:

The Building Trades Assistant is an integral specialty within the Facilities Maintenance department. This position is at the assistant level, but the employee will be required to perform less technical tasks independently. Employee will maintain, install, construct, repair, and modify wood, concrete and metal structural components on real-property facilities and equipment at Lamar University. Work is performed indoors and outdoors, occasionally in environments that are dusty, wet, noisy, or which may contain hazards. This position is considered as essential, and employees will be required to work as scheduled when University offices are closed due to emergency situations or natural disasters. These specialists work under the direct supervision of the Building Trades Supervisor, in the Facilities Maintenance department.

What You’ll Do – Position Duties

  • Troubleshoots/repairs structural components including jambs, stairwells, windows, flooring and roofing. Installs rafters, studs, sills, plates, braces, joists, floors, door assemblies, subfloors, panels (including sheetrock, and plywood), siding, sheathing, roofing and other building materials.

  • Prepares, applies, and finishes mortar, concrete, plaster, and stucco to surfaces.

  • Welds, cuts, brazes, solders ferrous and nonferrous metals using various welding processes.

  • Inspects, maintains, repairs, and installs mechanical & electrical rollup doors, fencing material and gates.

  • Applies protective coatings such as paint, primers, stains, and sealants to a variety of surfaces.

  • Installs forms/reinforcing material. Erects scaffolding/works from ladders and mobile platforms.

  • Inspects, maintains, repairs building roofing systems to include flat and pitched roofs.

  • Operates power tools to include power saws, drills, welders, grinders and other associated tools.

  • Coordinates with contractors to explain small projects, obtain price quotations, and monitor work.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Key Competencies:

  • Work requires a broad knowledge of competencies in the building trades technical field.

  • This includes general knowledge of carpentry, welding, masonry and protective coating principles.

  • The applicant should have a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and email applications.

  • Experience working with a Computerized Maintenance Management System.

  • Employees are expected to lead by example, demonstrating the highest level of ethics.

  • They are expected to work together to meet the needs of the department and university, by providing exemplary customer service to the staff, faculty and students.

Physical Requirements:

Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work. Some combination of climbing and balancing, to include climbing ladders, stooping, kneeling, crawling, working at heights and working in confined spaces. May involve the lifting of moderately heavy objects, up to 45 pounds. Requires a full range of physical motion to operate manual/electrically powered tools.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or GED .

  • An Associate Degree or completion of a formal technical training program within the field of carpentry, welding, masonry or related field.

  • At least (3) years of experience with a certified degree in the field of carpentry, welding, masonry or related field.

  • Experience in a construction industry trade, or building maintenance in an apartment complex, school or similar setting.

  • A valid Texas driver’s license is required.

Certification(s) Required:

  • Certification in a technical training program within the field of carpentry, welding, masonry or related field.
