This is a technical and skilled position requiring a good working knowledge of all tools and equipment required to diagnose, troubleshoot and repair problems with diesel and gasoline engines, both electronic and non-electronic manual and automatic transmissions, electronic troubleshooting and repair, vehicle suspensions, braking systems, A/C systems, hydraulic systems as well as ABS systems on all types of light and heavy trucks as well as heavy equipment. Must be able to accurately and completely enter data in maintenance logs and records, both manually and by computer keyboard in a timely manner. The job involves work indoors and outdoors, and the employee may be exposed to inclement weather as well as mechanical hazards. Employees will be on call on a rotating schedule for emergency needs related to Fleet Services.
Duties
Properly diagnoses and repairs vehicle drivelines, brakes and related components in a timely manner.
Properly diagnoses and repairs gas and diesel engines and their related components in a timely manner.
Properly diagnoses and repairs vehicle hydraulic systems and their related components in a timely manner.
Properly diagnoses and repairs vehicle electrical systems and their related components in a timely manner.
Road tests and operates vehicle and heavy equipment to determine adequacy of repairs. Communicates the vehicle status and needed repairs to the supervisor.
Utilizes and maintains the shop equipment and work area in a proper manner.
Performs all other assigned duties.
Minimum Qualifications
Required:
High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record (must obtain TX driver’s license within 90 days). .
Texas Class "A" Commercial Driver's License, or must be obtained within six months of date in position.
Two years related experience or equivalent formal training.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to read and comprehend service manuals and computerized diagnostic material as well as specialized instructions. Ability to use computer diagnostic equipment. Ability to operate all equipment used in diagnosing and repairing vehicles and equipment in a safe manner. Ability to operate heavy equipment. Ability to get along appropriately with co-workers and the public.
Attendance is an essential function of this position. The City reserves the right to require an employee in this position to work overtime. This position provides services or performs duties for the benefit of the general public during emergency situations. These may include services or duties different from those performed in the usual course and scope of your job. In the event of an evacuation, the incumbent in this position may be required to remain to perform needed services.
