Mclaren Bay Region Surgical Technologist First Assistant in Bay City, Michigan
Position Summary:
Responsible for providing surgical assistance in the exposure, hemostasis, cannulation, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for patients. The Surgical Assistant will perform preoperative, operative, and postoperative duties under the direction and supervision of the surgeon and accordance with hospital policy and appropriate laws and regulations. Provides surgical assistance in the operating room under the direction of a registered nurse or other designated operating room supervisor. Assists with departmental support activities following hospital and departmental policies, procedures, and standards of care.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Demonstrates knowledge and competency in performing basic and specific surgical technologist skills related to the first assistant role.
- Prepares and sets up operating room.
- Assists with terminal cleaning of operating rooms between cases.
- Assists the RN, Surgeon, Anesthesiologist, Physician Assistant, and Perfusionist in the delivery of perioperative nursing care delineated by pre-operative and post-operative functions.
- Demonstrates ability to anticipate surgeon's needs and next moves in order to facilitate smooth flow of operations.
- Provides visualization of the operative site during the operative procedure.
- Demonstrates ability to respond quickly and appropriately to control unexpected intraoperative bleeding. Using appropriate techniques to assist with hemostasis (clamping, cauterizing, tying, litigating, applying hemostatic clips, and placing hemostatic agents).
- Use appropriate technique to assist with closure of body planes.
- Demonstrates safe medication management within operative field.
- Exhibits a surgical conscience, watching for and reporting breaks in technique to prevent infections.
- Maintains a safe patient care environment.
- Responds to real or simulated emergency and disaster situations according to established procedure.
- Demonstrates competency in the utilization of specified equipment required for patient care.
- Assists Team Leader in the development of surgeon specific preference cards to accurately reflect changes in needs and advancements in equipment and technology.
- Assumes responsibility for maintaining knowledge base and skills through continuing education and other learning experiences.
Qualifications:
Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Successful completion of a Surgical Technologist program or equivalent experience.
- Completion of a surgical assistants program accredited through the Association of Surgical Assistants (ASA).
- American Health Association BLS certification as Healthcare Provider or equivalent through the Military Training Network (MTN).
- Certified Surgical Technologist or Certified Surgical Technologist First Assistant (CTSFA) by the National Board of Surgical Technology or Surgical Tech First Assisting (NBSTSA) or Completion of a surgical assistants program accredited through the Association of Surgical Assistants (ASA).
Preferred:
- One year of Surgical Technologist experience.
