This vacancy is being announced as a Classified position and will be filled as a Part Time WAE position that will not exceed 1245 hours in a 12 month period.

No Civil Service test scoreis required in order to be considered for this vacancy.

The Louisiana Public Health Laboratory seeks a WAE (Part-Time)Laboratory Technicianto receive, enter and process samples for testing at the public health laboratory system. The incumbent will serve in the central laboratory within the Louisiana Office of Public Health and the Louisiana Department of Health.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, assessing submitted samples to ensure their quality and integrity during transport, data entry, and processing of samples. Quality control and maintenance activities include temperature monitoring, inventory control, dissemination of supplies, preparation of media and overall support of laboratory analysis functions. Samples analyzed at the central OPH lab include both clinical and environmental samples. The successful candidate will fully support adherence to federal laboratory regulations mandated by regulating agencies. As an accredited laboratory, familiarity with CLIA requirements is preferred. The preferred candidate will have excellent communication skills.

All lab team members are charged with improving the laboratory’s support of the public health mission in Louisiana, while improving the lab’s overall diagnostic capabilities and service level. Imperative to the success of this candidate is the ability to ensure an on-going level of exceptional client service and quality control.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience working in a laboratory, especially experience working in an accessioning operation for clinical and/or environmental specimens

  • Familiarity with CLIA regulations

  • Customer service skills and experience interacting with laboratory customers

  • Experience with using a laboratory information management systems (LIMS)

  • Experience with typing and data entry skills

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Four years of experience as a laboratory assistant, laboratory technical assistant, laboratory technician or blood bank phlebotomist. Two years of experience must have been as a laboratory technician.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

Completion of a twelve month training program in histological techniques under the supervision of a qualified pathologist will substitute for two years of the general experience and one year of the laboratory technician experience.

Satisfactory completion of a one year program in medical laboratory technology at an accredited vocational-technical school will substitute for two years of the general experience.

College training will substitute for the required general experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience provided that six semester hours of each thirty are in any one or a combination of these specialized fields: laboratory animal technology, laboratory animal science, animal science, biology, microbiology, chemistry, nursing, zoology, agricultural sciences, physics, bacteriology, histological techniques, medical technology, immunology, urology or renewable resources.

An associate degree in medical technology or nursing will substitute for two years of the general experience and one year of laboratory technician experience.

A baccalaureate degree with twenty-four semester hours in bacteriology, biology, histological techniques, medical technology, immunology, urology, zoology, chemistry, histopathology, mycology, or microbiology or any combination of the above coursework will substitute for two years of the general experience and one year of laboratory technician experience.

Certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science will substitute for two years of the general experience and one year of laboratory technician experience.

Certification as a Laboratory Animal Technologist by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science will substitute for all of the required experience.

NOTE:

Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

For positions in Human Testing Laboratory:

Licensed to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Technician in the State of Louisiana as required by Louisiana Clinical Laboratory Personnel Law R.S. 37:1311-1329 and the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners.

Collects blood specimens on those difficult-to-draw patients such as pediatric, spastic, and uncooperative patients requiring considerable explanation, discussion, and persuasion.

Isolates, types, and groups bacteria and fungi present in body fluids, exudates, transudates, and other specimens.

Performs chemical tests and analyses of body fluids and other material related to clinical medicine or research in the medical sciences.

Performs various hematological tests and examinations such as red cell counts, white blood cell counts, platelet counts, hemoglobin determinations, and packed cell volume determinations.

Performs such procedures as glucose tolerance tests involving calculations of glucose required, explanation of procedure to patient and persuasion if necessary, and responsibility of results upon completion.

Performs ABO, Rh, and routine screening.

Operates and performs maintenance on the tissue processor or cryostat in histology.

Performs cytological procedures.
