Washington County Mental Health Services Behavioral Interventionist in Barre, Vermont

DIVISION: Children, Youth and Family Services

PROGRAM: Residential Treatment Programs

POSITION: Behavioral Interventionist

DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE TO: RTP Supervisor

ABOUT THIS POSITION:

Provide a safe, nurturing environment for youth who need it most during difficult times in their lives by developing positive relationships and giving them a sense of home and stability.

DESCRIPTION : Behavior interventionists provide individualized emotional and behavioral support to youth in many settings such as; in their community, schools, in the treatment program, during recreational activities, and in the youths’ home. The youth have individualized treatment plans and behavioral support plans that are used to guide the treatment that the behavior interventionists provide. Multiple full-time positions/multiple shifts (including overnights) are available.

SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide 1:1 services to assigned youth in the home, school and community.

  • Provide direct supervision, supportive counseling, social skill building, crisis intervention and daily living skills to assigned youth.

  • Provide client transportation in your own vehicle to and from community activities, mental health appointments and school. Staff is responsible to carry adequate insurance coverage.

  • Communicate well with school personnel, treatment providers, WCMHS staff and youth’s family.

  • Maintain ongoing data collection, i.e. daily logs, medication entry, point sheets.

  • Provide monthly progress summaries to Treatment Home Supervisor as required.

  • Complete timesheets, required trainings and assigned paperwork in a timely manner as well as completing medication entries, log entries and point sheets at every shift.

  • Attend treatment team meetings, staff meetings and mental health trainings as required.

  • Problem solves, de-escalate and manage crisis as needed. Defer complex issues to Treatment Home Supervisor.

  • Advocate for the client.

  • Work independently and as a team member.

  • Implement behavior plans and procedures designed to address youth’s identified goals and objectives.

  • To provide at least 15 to 25 positive interactions with the youth daily.

  • To familiarize, implement and comply with WCMHS policies and procedures.

  • To manage the physical safety of client and others, which includes:

  • Following behavioral and crisis plans for the identified youth.

  • Ability to learn and employ crisis de-escalation and passive restraint techniques to the satisfaction of a Handle With Care instructor.

  • Ability to physically restrain children and youth who are a danger to self or others.

  • Able to lift and carry 50 pounds.

  • Follow supervision directives.

  • Perform other duties / responsibilities as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education : Bachelor’s Degree in human services, education or psychology preferred. If degree requirements are not complete, working toward BA / BS or related field is required.

    Experience : Experience in human service delivery settings serving children and youth with challenging behaviors preferred. Willingness to work flexible hours, possession of a valid driver’s license and excellent driving record is required. Access to a safe, reliable and adequately insured vehicle is required.
