Microsoft’s Azure Data engineering team is leading the transformation of analytics in the world of data with products like databases, data integration, big data analytics, messaging & real-time analytics, and business intelligence. The products our portfolio include Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL DB, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure PostgreSQL, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Service Bus, Azure Event Grid, and Power BI. ​​Within Azure Data, the big data analytics team provides a range of products that enable data engineers and data scientists to extract intelligence from all data – structured, semi-structured, and unstructured. We are in the process of integrating our disparate products into Azure Synapse Analytics with a set of experiences that are meant to simplify and accelerate time to value.   ​

​​The Big Data Analytics team is looking for an experienced manager and a sound developer for the position of Principal Software Development Engineering Manager based in Barcelona, Spain.

​​

Responsibilities

  • ​Manage a team of individual contributors working on multiple projects at the same time. Engage in planning of work items, allocation of resources, delivery of projects within deadlines and accomodating new requirements based on partner team and customer asks.

  • Leverage subject-matter expertise of product features and partners with appropriate stakeholders (e.g., product managers) to drive a workgroup's project plans, release plans, and work items.

  • Drive identification of dependencies and the documentation and development of design to completion of features, product, application, service, or platform. • Use 30%-40% of the time doing individual contributor work like authoring code and reviewing pull requests.

  • Act as an Incident Manager (IM) in guiding other engineers in managing and mitigating high priority live site and customer reported issues. Drive developing and following the troubleshooting playbook, working with on-call personnel in mitigating any degradation of system/product/service due to downtime, interruptions and other service issues. Engage in alerting the stakeholders about status and initiate actions to restore system/product/service for simple and complex problems when appropriate.

  • Proactively seek new knowledge and adapt to new trends, technical solutions, and patterns that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of products while also driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • ​​Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Engineering or Mathematics or Physics or related technical discipline.

  • Relevant years of managing one or more teams of individual contributors.

  • Strong track record of software engineering and product development experience in industry

  • Proven track record of shipping end-user software services or products

  • In-depth object-oriented programming experience in (not limited to) Java/C++/C#

  • Equal ability in reading and enhancing existing code as well as writing entirely new code from scratch. ​

Other Requirements

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check:

  • This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications

  • ​​Master’s degree in Computer Science or Engineering or Mathematics or Physics or related technical discipline.

  • Experience with open-source software components.

  • Experience working on continuous integration and flighting services toolset.

  • Great curiosity and willingness to question.
