Covenant Health SWITCHBOARD OPERATOR in Bangor, Maine

Position Summary:

The Telecommunications Operator position is a fast-paced position that requires the screening and routing of both internal and external calls as well as during peak times and emergencies, call volumes will be increased, so the ability to handle stressful situations is a must. The operator must be technically proficient in using the computer and process all transactions in a professional, efficient, courteous and timely manner. Above-average communication skills (written and verbal) are required. Knowledge of hospital operations and department appropriate hospital policies and procedures.

Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent.

Qualifications: Two years' recent experience as a telecommunications operator is preferred.

Knowledge of medical terminology preferred Understanding and the ability to use and perform various functions on both Microsoft Office Excel and Word is a must. Ability to type at least 35 words a minute with the ability to multi-function in this environment.

This position functions under supervision and established protocols. Operators perform tasks utilizing various telecommunication equipment along with all aspects of security monitoring, including but not limited to hospital wide security alarms, gas alarms, generator alarms, refrigeration alarms and emergency code alarms, monitoring of security cameras, radio paging system, secure provider paging system and monitoring all systems for equipment failures and security alerts. The operator is also the second call down for various alarms that may be activated at our family medicine practices and should be capable of handling these and all alarms appropriately.

The St. Joseph telecommunication operator also acts as the answering service operator for several physician practices and must have the ability to answer the practice lines accordingly with the correct practice name and understanding of several different paging protocols, along with the ability to page out the correct practice provider for each practice being covered. Operators also provide paging service for other designated personnel according to departmental procedures.
