We are looking for a partner and customer focused Senior Design Manager focusing on Manufacturing, Mobility and Energy space to help define and drive strategy for a team consisting of Interaction Design, User Research, and Content Design, and collaborating across multiple organizations including Design, Product Management, Engineering, Data Science, Marketing, and our Product Leadership.

The ideal candidate knows how to bring the best design strategy together across multiple teams and workstreams. You will own specific touchpoints and process flows, and lead design between Design team members, product leadership and stakeholders. You will drive product and studio-wide processes in often changing and ambiguous environments, and act as the glue that keeps these teams running smoothly. Most importantly, you will continually advocate for our users and champion industry-leading, inclusive, user-centered design. And as a leader in Industry Clouds, you’ll keep a broad view of the portfolio to ensure we’re delivering world-class user experience across the product ecosystem.

Responsibilities

  • Leads long-term planning and defining of partner/customer/user need to anticipate experiences across Microsoft  Provides high-level guidance to team in identifying needs that are not spoken and including them in end-to-end design plan and process.

  • Provides thought leadership to the team regarding storytelling, while connecting the story to relevant designs across the  Communicates a product story to a variety of audiences in a way that inspires excitement and support of the product, and influences buy in from key stakeholders. Coaches’ teams on storytelling techniques and leads storytelling efforts like vision videos with internal teams and/or customers/partners. 

  • Makes the case for investments in designs to  Leads collaboration with leadership with PMs, Customer success team and development teams to shepherd experiences from concept to ship or co-build with partners/customers across products. Defines, influences, and builds support for long-term product strategy that situates the company's future in the context of emerging tech and company growth. 

  • Oversees work as a thought leader for new experiences and directs which design concepts to prototype across all major products of significant impact. Leads the vision for new designs based on broad industry insights, provides feedback to leadership about proposed designs, and collaborates with executives to promote long-term design visions and buy in for current and proposed designs, while ensuring alignment with strategic interests.

  • Ensures prototypes are built in accordance with company's brand and guidelines and directs the invention/improvement of guidelines when existing guidelines are unclear, and shares guidelines across teams and areas. 

  • Directs collaboration with PMs, Data Scientists, Developers and leadership to iterate further on designs during implementation to ensure optimal  Drives negotiations with leaders in Engineering and pushes design agenda forward while finding compromises and alternatives. Acts as the owner approving the ship readiness from a design perspective. 

  • Directs others to generate ideation solutions for complex products (, involving many constraints, thriving in ambiguity, requiring holistic view of interconnected systems) to improve designs. Brings diverse teams together and provides input on the strategic utilization of a variety of perspectives when ideating (e.g., business, experience, technology). Synthesizes complex solutions to a concise articulation of user wants and subsequent solutions. 

  • Handles resource and budget management for a UX team (, scoping projects, making the case for headcount, allocating resources, facilitating team members' relationships) 

  • Leads vision, planning, and thought leadership across the   vision and future plans to leaders across the company. Creates environments of collaboration, mentorship, and opportunities for everyone. Represents the company externally as a thought leader, networking with prominent designers and creatives across fields. Immerses themselves in cutting-edge design thinking and synthesizes and evangelizes insights in order to attract top talent. 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, or related field AND 8-10 years experience working in product or service design   

  • OR equivalent experience (e.g., experience using design thinking to solve problems).  

  • Applications must include a design portfolio. Applications without a portfolio will not be considered.  

  • Adaptability to the changing needs of a rapidly evolving business and flexibility to quickly change direction, iterate, and learn.

  • Must be a leader who can inspire great work from others, committed to ensuring a collaborative and inclusive culture that supports all members to contribute their best.   

  • Customer-centric mindset with experience turning abstract concepts into reality  

  • Humility to be open about what you do not know and curiosity and willingness to learn new techniques, technology, and industry domains.  

  • Excellent visual and verbal communication skills.  

  • Creative and inventive spirit, with a passion for great experiences.  

  • Proven experience working through a product cycle from inception to release, leading the team under tight deadlines.  

  • A track record of successfully leading large mission critical projects, cross company coordination and communication, and building large scale cloud services. 

  • Experience in a fast paced, startup style environment. 

  • An understanding of AI, LLMs (Large Language Models) and GPTs (generative pre-trained transformers) 

The ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
