Engineering / R&D at Nutanix

The Dev-Extension team (“DevEx” for short) at Nutanix is a 60+ person team located primarily in the US and India with subject matter experts in various areas. They play a crucial role in maintaining a high NPS score by solving and root causing challenging customer problems at a code level. The entire company admires their successes, and they have been often recognized in multiple R&D All Hands.What sets them apart is their commitment to sustaining engineering and their ability to address customer issues efficiently and holistically. The DevEx team collaborates with the core Development and QA teams to make the product better, and additionally builds automation tools to reduce the triage time for the Support organization.

Your Role

You will be focusing on OnCall tickets in the Infrastructure/LCM area on both the data and management planes. You will help in troubleshooting and providing relief to customers in a timely manner, and then do a thorough root cause analysis to extract product and scaling defects/improvements that may have escaped QA testing or documentation.

  • Work as a part of the extended software development team on Software Features/Bugs

  • Address Customer Escalations forwarded to Engineering (i.e. OnCalls)

  • Diagnose and debug deep and insidious issues; provide workarounds and fixes for these issues

  • Develop automation tools to find bottlenecks, and do root cause analysis and corrective action

  • Engage with customers and support engineers when needed to solve run-time production problems

  • Develop a deep understanding of complex distributed systems, and design innovative solutions for customer requirements

  • Work on Infrastructure areas like cluster and node bring-up, hardware management, system resources, kernel-layer issues and networking

  • Work on the Life Cycle Manager that is responsible for software and firmware upgrades, and their compatibility and deployment across both storage infrastructure and management clusters

  • Work closely with SW Development, QA, Documentation and Product Management teams apart from other DevEx teams to deliver high-quality products in a fast-paced environment

Program in Linux environment and employ robust software engineering practices to develop and maintain reliable, field-serviceable, and maintainable software components

What You Will Bring

  • Love of programming and rock-solid experience in one or more languages: C, C++, or Python, ideally for enterprise-quality software

  • Extensive knowledge of UNIX/Linux troubleshooting tools

  • Development experience in file systems, operating systems, hypervisors, networking, distributed systems management

  • Experience working with virtualization technologies like Linux KVM, VMware, Hyper-V, Xen (KVM and VMware preferred)

  • Familiarity with OS internals, concepts of distributed data management, and design/implementation tradeoffs in building clustered, high- performance, fault-tolerant distributed systems software

  • Strong written, verbal and collaboration skills

  • Team mentality that works well in fast-paced situations and startup environments

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Computer Science, or related field

  • 4-6 years of industry experience with debugging system issues in a Linux environment using well known tools

About the Team

The Infrastructure/LCM DevEx team currently consists of 7 engineers with varied experience levels in Bengaluru and San Jose. We are looking for passionate candidates who have past knowledge in troubleshooting distributed systems, are familiar with virtualization in general, and are willing to learn something new every day.

Meet Dheeraj - Hiring Manager

  • Dheeraj has been working at Nutanix since August 2014, primarily on the Infrastructure side but also in areas like LCM, hardware platforms and microservices. Prior to Nutanix, he worked at Brocade in the enterprise networking area for 12 years where he focused on Multicast routing/switching.

  • Apart from code development, Dheeraj has been involved in sustaining work for the better part of 20 years. During this time, he has learned to handle complex product level issues that span multiple areas, which forced him to learn new fields as well as being able to work with different personalities - always with the focus on resolving customer problems, root causing them, ensuring product and documentation improvements, and training associated teams with the learnings.
