Johns Hopkins University X-Ray Scientist in Baltimore, Maryland
We are seeking an experienced X-ray scientist who will provide scientific support to the Materials Characterization Processing (MCP) Core Facility in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE), Whiting School of Engineering. The successful candidate will manage the micro computed tomography (RX Solutions EasyTom), the X-ray diffraction (Bruker D8 Advance four circle) labs, and a PHI XPS. In addition, there will be new µCT and X-ray tools acquired by the MCP. The position will report to the Director and the Director of Operations of the MCP, and will also involve outward facing activities with the broader Johns Hopkins University, including the School of Medicine and the Applied Physics Laboratory. In addition, this position is the safety officer for the MCP. This is a non-tenure track faculty position of the DMSE.
The successful candidate will establish the two new X-ray facilities' protocols, train users, participate in collaborative research, and develop new techniques. The MCP is committed to furthering the education and developing the career of their staff through attending workshops, meetings and training events.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Establish protocols for the µCT, XRD and XPS instruments and maintain the labs
Teach new users and mentor the progression of student knowledge base
Develop new techniques
Interface with service engineers
Guide research directions in X-ray applications with faculty, students and outside users
Collaborate or assist in ongoing research with JHU, outside university, government and industrial users
Monitor performance of lab environment
Support other MCP staff in keeping the facility running
Oversee demonstrations, workshops, etc.
Additional Responsibilities:
Collaborate as Co-PI on grants.
Participate in the national and international microscopy community.
Career development
Qualifications or Specialized Certifications:
Experience with µCT acquisition, reconstruction and segmentation
Experience with X-ray powder diffraction acquisition and processing
Experience with XPS acquisition and processing
Experience with thin film and reciprocal mapping measurements
Knowledge of crystallography and crystal structures
Knowledge of Lab safety.
Doctorate Degree in Physical Science plus 3 yrs experience with µCT and XRD
Good communication skills
Enjoy working with students
