Johns Hopkins University Research Program Assistant in Baltimore, Maryland

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery seeks a Research Program Assistant who will be responsible for the oversight of assigned research studies in support of the PI, postdocs and other research and administrative staff. This position will also be responsible for basic data collection and management for several research projects. Screens and recruits potential study participants according to protocol's inclusion and exclusion criteria. This role will work directly under the supervision of an Administrative Manager, Principal Investigator and co-investigators.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities :

  • Completes screening process in clinic settings to identify potential participants.

  • Recruits and consents potential study participants according to protocols’ inclusion and exclusion criterial. Must be knowledgeable of the protocols so that study activities are completed correctly.

  • Ensures proper written informed consent from each study participant is obtained prior to entering study; ensure proper storage of consent forms in participants’ research records.

  • Completes status update reports accurately and in a timely fashion to inform the study investigator.

  • Data collection to include abstracting data from paper and electronic medical records, conducting baseline and follow-up interviews over the phone or in person, and obtaining ancillary data for study participants.

  • Data management responsibilities include inputting, organizing, editing, and verifying accuracy of data in databases. Serves as liaison between investigator and IRB for administrative matters.

  • Maintains knowledge of research study protocols.

  • Initiates and manages IRB applications.

  • Assists in the development of presentations, publications, toolkits, flyers, letters and other materials for dissemination of research information.

  • Assists in the development of tables and figures for reports and manuscripts.

  • Assists in the coordination and participates in research study meetings, including the preparation of agendas and taking of detailed meeting minutes.

  • Assists with information communication and dissemination efforts, including website and newsletter maintenance and development.

  • Maintains project databases.

  • Using internal software tools, database, and script guidelines, reach out to study participants on the phone to speak with them about the project, determine eligibility, obtain oral consent, and record responses to interview questions.

  • Ensures security, quality, and confidentiality of data by following policies and procedures.

  • Makes follow-up survey calls to enrolled participants.

  • Completes data entry

  • Participates in staff meetings.

  • Completes all training in a timely manner.

  • Typing, filing, faxing, mass mailings, chart review.

  • Assists in preparing recruitment and tracking update reports.

  • Assists in preparing monthly quality control and data management reports.

  • Performs miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory) :

  • High School Diploma or GED.

  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula:

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Some college courses.

  • Some related experience.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :

  • Ability to read and comprehend research protocol.

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Solid planning and organizational skills.

  • Sound working knowledge of spreadsheets and databases for data entry and retrieval.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.

Physical Requirements:

  • Sitting, standing and walking for extended period.

  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.

  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s).

  • Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

JHU Equivalency Formula: _ 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job._

Starting Salary Range: $15.00 - $18.50/hr (commensurate with experience)

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
