Johns Hopkins University Research Assistant in Baltimore, Maryland

General Description

Under the general supervision of a faculty investigator or other university-based researchers, develops and tests models and algorithms for using symbolic regression to generate interatomic potential models, and develops and implements an internet-accessible database of low-energy structures for small atomic clusters. Prepares and submits manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed journals describing research results. Does so following established protocols or does so with appropriate instruction. Uses basic science knowledge to learn techniques/methods of the research group.

The primary duties and responsibilities of the job

  • Designs, develops, and tests software algorithms to generate interatomic potential models using symbolic regression

  • Uses density functional theory to generate training and test data for the symbolic regression algorithms

  • Uses density functional theory and genetic algorithms to calculate the structure and properties of low-energy cluster structures

  • Cleans, organizes and maintains data on low-energy cluster structures and develops and maintains associated software tools

  • Develops and maintains a web site interface for low-energy cluster structure database

  • Writes and edits manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals describing research

  • Uses requisite computing resources available to the research group;

  • Records data;

  • Searches the scientific literature to identify research relevant to the project;

  • Presents results both within the research group and to a broader audience of other researchers involved in the project;

  • Monitors computing resource usage, material and supply inventory levels, and orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, counts orders upon receipt;

  • Works with Python, Java, Microsoft Word, Endnote, and Excel.

Minimal Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related discipline.

  • Some related experience.

  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in materials science and engineering preferred.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
