Johns Hopkins University Research Analyst in Baltimore, Maryland

The Johns Hopkins University Stein-O'Brien Lab is seeking to hire a Research Analyst within the Single Cell Training & Analysis Center (STAC). This is a platform to support the development and implementation of state-of-the-art single cell technologies across the Johns Hopkins community. STAC serves as both a service center and an educational platform that provides training in all aspects of single cell studies and technology development. We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join the experimental division of the STAC team.

Training will be provided as needed, however some experience with computational analysis of high-throughput biological data (R, Python, Linux) and substantial molecular biology experience is required. This position is well suited to Ph.D. scientists who do not necessarily wish to pursue an independent career, but desire to work on a variety of exciting projects in a collaborative and engaging environment to apply cutting-edge technologies from a fast-moving field.

The Research Analyst of the Single Cell Training & Analysis Center (STAC) plays a pivotal role in steering the center's mission and vision, ensuring it remains at the forefront of cellular research advancements. With the fast-evolving landscape of single cell and spatial transcriptomics, the Research Analyst will not only oversee daily operations but will also help set strategic directions, ensuring that the center continues to provide cutting-edge resources and services to its members and partners.

Moreover, this role requires a dynamic leader who is deeply rooted in the principles of operational efficiency, education, and innovation. Collaborative by nature, this position will cultivate relationships with both commercial and academic entities, fostering an environment where knowledge is shared, and advancements are made collectively. They should exhibit a genuine passion for pushing the boundaries of single cell and spatial transcriptomics research while nurturing the training and development of the center's staff and members.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Equipment Maintenance

  • Oversee and ensure the regular maintenance, calibration, and optimization of all equipment, guaranteeing its continuous functionality.

  • Establish preventive maintenance schedules and liaise with technicians and vendors for timely servicing.

Managing Resource Reservations

  • Supervise the reservation system, ensuring equitable and efficient utilization of resources by all members.

  • Address scheduling conflicts and assure resource availability to satisfy research demands.

Standard Operating Procedures & Workflows

  • Develop, organize, and disseminate standard operating procedures, workflows, and protocols for research consistency and excellence.

  • Periodically review and update procedures in accordance with advancements in the field.

  • Train individuals on protocols and equipment required for single cell or spatial transcriptomics workflows.

  • Building robust 'sample to data' workflows and SOPs tailored to various applications/projects, in collaboration with biology teams.

Ordering & Inventory Management

  • Oversee the ordering process, ensuring timely procurement of essential equipment and supplies.

  • Manage inventory effectively, guaranteeing stock sufficiency and reducing excess.

Staff Development

  • Champion staff training and mentorship, instilling a culture of continuous learning and excellence.

  • Assess performance, provide regular feedback, and facilitate opportunities for growth and development.

Research & Development

  • Remain updated with the newest advancements in single cell and spatial transcriptomic protocols.

  • Advocate for and integrate novel methodologies and technologies into the center's offerings.

Educational Initiatives

  • Design, spearhead, and promote diverse educational activities, such as workshops, seminars, and tutorials.

  • Engage with external experts, facilitating guest lectures to diversify and enhance educational content.

Partnership Management

  • Act as the main liaison for both commercial and academic partners, nurturing relationships that propel the center’s goals forward.

  • Handle partnership negotiations, collaborations, and agreements, ensuring the center’s objectives are met.

Collaborative Engagements

  • Serve as the pivotal point of contact for collaborative projects with STAC member labs.

  • Organize regular meetings and communications to synchronize and advance collaborative endeavors.

  • Interact and engage with other lab members and collaborators in a productive and professional manner.

Project Management

  • Oversee and manage diverse research projects, ensuring timely completion and adherence to quality standards.

  • Coordinate with internal teams and external collaborators, ensuring streamlined communication and progress tracking.

Sample Intake & Tracking

  • Manage the intake process of samples, ensuring proper documentation, storage, and handling.

  • Implement and oversee a robust project & sample tracking system, guaranteeing transparency and traceability at all stages.

Data Collection & Dissemination

  • Ensure meticulous data collection, storage, and management in adherence to global standards.

  • Oversee the dissemination of data to relevant stakeholders, ensuring both accessibility and security.

Physical Requirements:

  • Working with or have potential for exposure to hazardous and/or infectious material.

  • Working with or have potential for exposure to animal(s) and/or animal material(s).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in a related science.

  • Six years related experience, with proven technical knowledge and laboratory experience.

  • Desire to learn about and implement new technologies.

  • Follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform experiments.

  • Detail-oriented and experience with rigorous record keeping.

  • Highly motivated and a quick learner of new technologies.

  • Independent and capable of thoughtful problem solving.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with current single cell analysis methods.

  • Hands-on experience with next-gen library preparation and sequencing.

  • Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies quickly.

  • Familiarity with diverse sample types and processing methods

  • General cell biology experience, including cell culture, sorting, counting, and manipulation.

  • Experience with molecular biology workflow automation.

  • Programming experience or experience with Linux systems and command-line utilities will be given special consideration.

Starting Salary Range: Min $74,400 - Max $130,400 Annually ($86,390 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
