Johns Hopkins University Laboratory Technician in Baltimore, Maryland

We are seeking a Laboratory Technician who will be supporting ongoing projects related to the effect of environmental exposures on the immune system and the brain. The Laboratory Technician will perform routine lab processes and follow routine protocols under close supervision to maintain the general laboratory. He/She will work with all members of the lab and will assist as needed in human and mouse specimen management, mouse colony management and experiments, processing of mouse and human samples as well as in general laboratory maintenance under Biosafety levels 1 and 2. If compatible with other tasks, he/she will also be able to work on an individual project.

The applicant will be responsible for general maintenance of the laboratory such as performing cell culture work, routinely check and order laboratory supplies, perform laboratory safety evaluations, maintain laboratory space, equipment and inventory in an appropriate and professional manner.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Follow established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments, which may include basic tissue culture, basic molecular biology, basic microbiology or other techniques in which they will be trained under Biosafety Levels 1 and 2 conditions.

  • Coordinate and maintain records of mouse breeding and experiments under Biosafety Level 1 and 2 conditions.

  • Acquisition and assist in aliquoting tissue samples for storage, analysis.

  • Administer environmental exposure treatments and alleviation treatments to animals using specially prepared water or oral gavage.

  • Maintain an organized, detailed record of experimental data.

  • Monitor inventory levels and proper storage of materials and supplies.

  • Will handle hazardous (e.g. arsenic) and bio-hazardous (e.g. human tissues) material under Biosafety Levels 1 and 2 conditions.

  • Interact with faculty, lab and administrative staff, students, postdoctoral fellows, and outside vendors.

  • Meet weekly with designated laboratory staff to review recent data, troubleshoot current experiments, review new experimental protocols and prioritize new experiments.

  • Demonstrate organization, curiosity, problem solving, resourcefulness, and flexibility.

  • Time flexibility for working hours required to process human specimens and work with mice.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent with some science coursework.

  • Certificate from technical institute or internship experience preferred. Training Certificate from Technical Institute preferred.

Starting Salary Range: $15.25 - $23.00 HRLY ($45,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
