Position Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Patient Safety in Johns Hopkins Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety & Quality, the Assistant Director, Patient Safety is responsible for planning, implementing, directing and/or evaluating patient safety and clinical quality improvement programs throughout the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Utilizing knowledge of best evidence-based practice, combined with knowledge and experience of front line clinical operations and methods of quality improvement, design thinking and Innovation to provide leadership to improve measures of quality and patient safety across Johns Hopkins. The Assistant Director, Patient will serve as a direct resource with a high degree of both clinical and technical expertise for improvement teams on the methods and practice of improvement projects using expert methods. In addition, the Assistant Director, Patient Safety will work with clinical leaders and Johns Hopkins Comprehensive Unit-based Patient Safety Program” (CUSP) team experts to improve on quality & safety measures and improve clinical outcomes through developing innovative solutions to complex problems, including the use of care "bundles," managing medication safety, and encouraging unit-based ownership of safety.

Competencies:

Education:

Requires a Master’s degree in a clinical discipline i.e. Nursing, Social Work, Pharmacy, Physician’s Assistant, etc.

Knowledge:

Requires knowledge and experience in methods of improvement, theories of change, and current concepts of teambuilding. Technical knowledge of metric development, data collection and analysis is critical to success in this position.

Skills:

Position requires a high level of organizational skills to initiate and manage projects, timetables and implementations; advanced interpersonal skills to manage, direct and coordinate the activities of multiple departments, to positively communicate and work with professionals at all levels of the organization; analytical ability to develop and interpret application of best practices, outcome metrics and the like; and excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to influence and negotiate individual and group decision-making. Strong leadership and management and group facilitation skills. Proficiency in excel, power point and other desktop applications required.

Required Licensure Certification, etc.

Requires current licensure for the respective clinical discipline.

Work Experience:

Position requires a strong clinical background (examples could include nurse, social worker, pharmacist, PA, etc) as demonstrated by 10-15 years of clinical experience and at least 5 years of progressive program/project development and quality improvement experience.

Day Shift, Full Time (40 hours) (8:30am - 5:00pm)

Exempt, Pay Grade: ML

Working Conditions: Works in normal office environment where there is little discomfort to due to the extremes of heat, dust, noise, temperature and the like
