Building Code Inspector

Full-Time, Non-Exempt Position

Mitchell County is accepting applications from qualified applicants for the position of Mitchell County Building Inspector.

This position is responsible for the issuance of permits; the inspection of construction, electrical, plumbing, fire, and mechanical installations with code compliance; enforcement of local ordinances; and the reporting and compliance procedures on code enforcement and inspections activities. Knowledge of North Carolina State codes and local laws and the ability to interpret and apply such is pivotal to the function of this position.

The employee has the responsibility for securing compliance with regulations when violations are identified. This position must exhibit independent judgement, and also establish and maintain working relations with contractors, property owners, elected officials and the general public. The employee will report to the Development Codes Administrator.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Inspects

construction

projects

so

as

to

enforce

the

North

Carolina

codes for all 5 trades

and related County

ordinances governing minimum standards and requirements of new construction, alterations, repairs and materials

used.

Performs field inspections and re-inspections of commercial and residential facilities for compliance with building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and fire codes; issues warnings and stop work orders, if necessary where construction is not being made in compliance with building code regulations.

Inspects

building

design

and

construction

to

determine

adherence

to

codes

requiring accessibility to wheelchair-bound

individuals.

Performs inspections of new and existing residences, businesses and other buildings for

conformance

with

safety

standards,

codes,

and

ordinances;

issues

building

permits and inspection certificates for approved

installation.

Maintains all necessary records and reports on inspections.

Confers

with

contractors,

architects,

engineers,

and

others

regarding

construction

codes and building plans.

Examines

construction

sites

for

landscape

alterations

and

adherence

to

erosion

control ordinances; advises and instructs property owners, engineers, contractors, etc., in landscape design to minimize erosion and prevent flood damage.
