Laboratory Manager

As Lab Manager, the duties and responsibility are the overall management and operation of the CMT Laboratory, as well as RSO duties. A strong focus on laboratory oversight, ensuring the accuracy, reliability, and quality of test results, and compliance with industry standards. Address and improve any performance issues within the lab, maintain equipment (including lab specific equipment and field equipment), manage and schedule personnel, and ensure that all lab activities are conducted safely, efficiently, and in compliance with codes and standards.

Lab Responsibilities Include but are not limited to:

  • Laboratory Oversight and Management:

  • Ensure the efficient and effective operation of the CMT lab.

  • Oversee daily lab activities to ensure accurate and timely testing.

  • Develop, implement, and monitor standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all lab operations.

  • Maintain compliance with all relevant standards and regulations.

  • Maintain Lab management systems and operations for AASHTO Accreditation.

  • Prepare and maintain document control required for the AASHTO Accreditation including proficiency sample testing and review.

Expectations: 1) Consistent monitoring of lab activities (physically on site); 2) Adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs).

  • Quality Assurance and Control:

  • Implement and maintain a robust quality management system.

  • Conduct regular audits and inspections to ensure adherence to quality standards.

  • Address any quality issues or discrepancies in a timely manner.

  • Ensure accurate calibration and maintenance of lab and field equipment.

Expectation: 1) Perform regular audits and inspections to address any quality issues. 2) Provide detailed and adequate responses to quality discrepancies, affecting the reliability/accuracy of lab results.

  • Personnel Management:

  • Supervise, train, and mentor technicians and staff.

  • Facilitate training and certification of lab staff

  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback.

  • Address and resolve performance issues among staff members.

  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.

Expectations: 1) Effective supervision and training of lab technicians, contributing to enhanced skills gaps and performance. 2) Timely and sufficiently detailed performance evaluations and feedback, enhancing staff development.

  • Safety and Compliance:

  • Ensure all lab activities are conducted in compliance with safety regulations and best practices.

  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of health and safety regulations.

  • Lead safety training and promote a culture of safety within the lab.

Expectations: 1) Consistent enforcement of safety protocols, preventing potential safety hazards in the lab. 2) Adequate maintenance of safety records and documentation.

  • Resource Management:

  • Manage the inventory and maintenance of lab and field equipment and its supplies.

  • Ensure optimal utilization of lab resources.

  • Communication and Reporting:

  • Prepare and present regular updates as requested on lab performance, quality issues, and corrective actions.

  • Liaise with clients and regulatory bodies as needed.

  • Communicate effectively with ATO and Regional Operations.

  • Other Duties as directed or assigned

RSO Responsibilities:

Expectation: Comprehensive management of the radiation safety program, including adequate monitoring of radiation exposure levels. Maintenance of accurate and up-to-date records of radiation use and safety audits. Review and update all licensing and permits documentation. Ensure full compliance with all applicable regulations by conducting a comprehensive review and implementing corrective actions where necessary.

  • Radiation Safety Program Management:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive radiation safety program in compliance with all applicable regulations.

  • Ensure all radiation use is in accordance with the facility's radiation safety policies and procedures.

  • Monitor and assess the effectiveness of the radiation safety program and make necessary improvements.

  • Regulatory Compliance:

  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations regarding the use of radioactive materials and radiation-producing equipment.

  • Maintain all necessary licenses and permits for the possession and use of radioactive materials.

  • Prepare and submit mandatory reports to regulatory agencies as required.

  • Radiation Monitoring and Protection:

  • Oversee the monitoring of radiation levels in the workplace and ensure they are within acceptable limits.

  • Implement measures to protect personnel from radiation exposure, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and monitoring devices.

  • Conduct regular audits and inspections to identify and mitigate radiation hazards.

  • Training and Education:

  • Deliver mandatory training programs on radiation safety for all personnel who work with or around radioactive materials.

  • Ensure that all personnel are adequately trained and informed about radiation safety procedures and protocols.

  • Incident Response and Reporting:

  • Respond promptly and effectively to any incidents involving radiation exposure or contamination.

  • Investigate radiation incidents and take appropriate corrective actions.

  • Report radiation incidents to the appropriate regulatory authorities as required.

  • Record Keeping and Documentation:

  • Maintain accurate records of all radiation safety activities, including training, monitoring, inspections, and incidents.

  • Ensure that all documentation is complete, up-to-date, and readily accessible for review by regulatory authorities.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma; Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field strongly preferred

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a lab manager/technician with experience as a CMT field technician

  • Strong knowledge of CMT testing methods, equipment, and industry standards.

  • Proven experience in setting up and managing a laboratory facility.

  • Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures in a laboratory setting.

Certifications :

  • Valid Driver’s License

  • American Concrete Institute (ACI) Certifications:

  • Concrete Laboratory Testing Technician - Level 1 or Concrete Strength Testing Technician (Required)

  • Concrete Laboratory Testing Technician - Level 2 (preferred or ability to achieve)

  • Aggregate Testing Technician - Level 1 or 2 (preferred or ability to achieve)

  • Concrete Field-Testing Technician - Grade 1 (preferred or ability to achieve)

  • National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET):

  • Construction Materials Testing: Asphalt, Concrete, (Levels I, II, or III) (preferred or ability to achieve)

Other Miscellaneous Qualities:

  • Familiarity with Lab Information Management Systems (LIMS)
