Job/Position DescriptionResearch Specialist IVUnder the supervision of the Research Specialist V/Epi Team Lead, the Research Specialist IV performs highly advanced (senior-level) research work in the area of birth defects epidemiology, research, and data management. The position will coordinate branch IRB-approved data requests, participate in Branch interoperability initiatives, and assist in and/or lead senior-level epidemiologic analyses and investigations of birth defects. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. This position is suitable for up to three days of telecommuting per week, where appropriate/feasible.Essential Job FunctionsAs a lead or collaborator, designs projects, conducts analyses, and presents/publishes results in the area of birth defects epidemiology and public health practice. Conducts and assists with epidemiologic investigations/analyses related to the prevalence, causes, and outcomes of birth defects. Provides research consultation and technical assistance to programmatic, medical, and public health professionals on epidemiological methods, research/surveillance design, and program evaluation/assessment of public health practices on birth defects epidemiology. Collaborates and consults with epidemiologists and other research specialist staff across the agency and other states/federal agencies on data analyses and the development of abstracts and presentations. Delivers presentations for professional audiences. Develops or participates in peer-reviewed manuscripts. Assists with branch data linkages activities. Tracks birth defect code (i.e., BPA codes) changes and maintains an updated BPA code Excel table on an ongoing basis. (30%)Collaborates with BDESB staff, other DSHS programs, and external data requestors to submit applications to the DSHS IRB for data requests. Oversees the Branch administrative processes for data requests. Serves as a resource to Branch staff, BDESB data researchers, and key personnel by providing support for the preparation of research applications, including guidance on applicable regulations, and submission in the DSHS IRB. Maintains documentation of IRB decisions, related correspondence, proposal approval, and records management. Handles or assists with drafting IRB documents (e.g., applications, and amendments). Provides or assists with providing TBDR and related data to data requestors and to national and international partners and organizations. (30%)Assists with birth/defect cluster investigations and/or small area analyses. Coordinates communication related to cluster investigations, and their requests for data with internal and external parties. Prepares data for analysis. Handles or assists with drafting investigation reports and documents. Provides or assists with providing TBDR cluster investigation data to data requestors and to national and international partners and organizations. Documents and tracks Branch cluster investigations. Prepares annual summaries of active and completed investigations. (20%)Provides technical assistance to Branch staff on data interoperability. Supports interoperability initiatives and serves on the Branchand#146;s interoperability team. Works on Branch projects in collaboration with Branch and staff across the agency and other state/federal agencies on interoperability initiatives.
