Microsoft’s Azure Data engineering team is leading the transformation of analytics in the world of data with products like databases, data integration, big data analytics, messaging & real-time analytics, and business intelligence. ​​Within Azure Data, the Principal Software Engineering Manager provides a range of products that enable data engineers and data scientists to extract intelligence from all data – structured, semi-structured, and unstructured. We build the Data Engineering, Data Science, and Data Integration pillars of Microsoft Fabric.​

​​Microsoft builds a world-class SQL engine with decades of innovation that is used in SQL Server, Azure SQL Database, and our cloud analytics scale-out SQL offering Azure Synapse offering data warehouses storing hundreds of terabytes of data. These mission-critical systems require deep systems expertise to build and grow to satisfy the needs of our customers, from making systems that don't ever fail to pushing the absolute boundaries of what performance can be achieved to process queries. This team gets to work on many challenging customer problems and opportunities every single day, and we are looking for candidates that want to come help us build the next generation of features for our customers.

This is an opportunity to work in a diverse and collaborative team environment on challenging technical problems that span the entire stack of database technology - programming languages, query processing/optimization, and distributed systems). We use the latest academic research to push the latest hardware to its limits and to deliver record-breaking query performance.

This role is a hands-on manager role who will manage a team of 5 to design and deliver solutions for improving query performance.

Responsibilities

  • Create and execute project plans to deliver solutions on a schedule

  • Embody our manager culture of "model, coach, care" to support our engineers in their work and career growth

  • Designing efficient and supportable solutions used in production by our customers.

  • Be part of the on-call rotation for maintaining service health

  • Mentor new and junior engineers to bring them up to speed in software development environment.

  • Design and develop highly-efficient code that scales to allow queries to run efficiently over very large data volumes. ​

Qualifications

Required /Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python o OR equivalent experience.

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements arerequired for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check:

  • This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications

  • ​​Unmanaged language expertise preferred.

  • Good understanding of database system internals

  • Ability to do performance analysis/improvements on multi-threaded server software

  • Experience in building and shipping production grade software or services.

  • Results-oriented with a passion for delighting customers with our work

  • Ability to work collaboratively, solve programs in groups, and celebrate success as a team

  • ​​Bachelor's or Master's degree with 10 years of work experience building systems (software or hardware) or back-end software in the fields of database systems, operating systems, or other systems fields with a deep hardware focus

  • 5 years of experience managing engineering teams

  • 5 years of experience with programming hardware devices (GPUs, FPGAs, ASICs, or similar)

  • Deep technical background on efficient systems implementation (Big-O complexity analysis or the equivalent in hardware about how to get close to theoretical maximum of the device's capability)Deep systems engineering background with an understanding of modern computer memory hierarchies, direct memory access mechanisms, and PCIe devices and related device drivers​

​Software Engineering M6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $158,500 - $276,600 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $202,800 - $304,200 per year.
