TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION N517 Behavioral Traffic Safety Section Director - Traffic Safety Division in Austin, Texas

Oversees and directs a section of professional, technical and administrative employees in the planning, implementation and evaluation of the state highway safety program and the Texas Highway Safety Plan. Reports to the Traffic Safety Division Deputy Director. Work requires contact with governmental agencies, law enforcement agencies, private entities, vendors, the media and the public. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.Essential Duties: Approves contracts, grants, amendments, subcontracts and/or subgrants.Directs the development and completion of an annual administrative evaluation report.Directs the strategic planning process to set priority highway safety goals and strategies.Ensures local and state agencies and departmental personnel receive technical assistance and training required toimplement the Texas Highway Safety Plan and the safety management system plan.Establishes procedures for the development and processing of project/program applications regarding available federalfunds.Oversees the development, implementation and evaluation of the Texas Highway Safety Program in accordance with federalrules and regulations.Oversees the traffic safety budget planning process including the allocation of federal and state funds, state and localmatching funds and private contributions.Recommends state policy on traffic safety matters through minute orders and rules which determine district fundingallocations and operating procedures.Represents the Department on state and national committees relating to traffic safety programs; occasionally substitutesfor the Executive Director as the governor's highway safety representative.Represents the Department to the press, serving as agency spokesperson on highway safety issues for coordinated mediacampaigns and during press conferences.Assists in the development of divisional long and short-term goals and objectives.Evaluates legislative initiatives that affect the Department and directs the development of responses and implementation plans.
