Job Summary and Qualifications

Although this position reports directly to the Division AVP of Cardiovascular Operations, there will be a matrixed reporting structure to the facility's Chief Operating Officer [COO] or Chief Nursing Officer [CNO]. This dual reporting structure will serve to support the Director of Cardiovascular Services by providing division-level strategic direction/oversight, flexible cross-collaboration, and communication among other CV depts. within St. David’s Healthcare, along with the collaborative executive support and direction required at the facility level for day-to-day operations.

The Director maintains 24-hour responsibility for the direction, supervision, coordination, and evaluation of activities and performances in the professional practice of the Cardiovascular [CV] staff in the following depts:

  • Cardiac Catheterization Lab

  • EP Lab

  • Cardiac Pre/Post Procedure Dept.

  • You will demonstrate St. David’s Healthcare I-CARE values daily and hold those within the supervised dept(s) accountable to these values to promote a healthy culture and work environment.

  • You will demonstrate an understanding of productivity guidelines and patient acuity in providing for quality patient care. Meet productivity guidelines for each shift as closely as possible.

  • You will review and approve employee payroll. Assure that payroll sheets are accurately completed and are turned in to the Payroll Department within the specified time frame.

  • You will assure that new employees receive appropriate orientation to the unit. Unit orientation includes the use of equipment used in the supervised dept(s), QA and QI activities, and special skills certifications.

  • You will assure that the education and training of the CV staff is ongoing. Education and training are designed to maintain and improve the knowledge and skills associated with the care of cardiology patients and are based on the identified learning needs of the staff. In-service or other educational activities are routinely provided for staff.

  • You will assure that staff members are certified to perform the specialized skills required in the cardiovascular departments. (i.e. Moderate Sedation, CPR, Venipuncture, etc).

  • You will hold at least 4 unit-specific staff meetings per year. Meeting content includes discussion of QA and QI activities, identification of problems, proposed solutions, exchange of information, and relevant educational topics. Minutes are written and maintained for all meetings held.

  • You will maintain accurate, complete, and current unit education records for all staff members.

  • You will interview and hire qualified staff members whose skills and knowledge match the patient care needs of the cardiovascular departments, including peer interviews if necessary. Each time an employee is hired, ensure that past experience is investigated, licensure is verified when applicable, and employment physicals, drug screens, and other requirements are completed prior to hire. Hiring paperwork is accurate and complete

  • You will perform all employee evaluations on time. Collaborate with the Supervisor and other staff in obtaining accurate information regarding employee’s knowledge, skills, and performance of their responsibilities. Objectively measure employee’s behavior and performance in line with ICARE Values. The information documented on performance evaluations is accurate and complete.

  • You will effectively perform counseling to employees when standards are not met, policies are violated or unprofessional behavior occurs. Counseling is performed to educate the employee and ensure that performance is appropriate. Documentation of counseling is complete and objective. Follow-up with employees in the counseling process is consistent. Information concerning counseling is kept confidential.

  • You will make sure commendation forms are completed, or other forms of recognition are used to acknowledge superior performance and/or behavior of CV employees. Provide public acknowledgment of letters of commendation or other forms of compliments received for employees. Appropriate distribution of RISE points, for peer and staff recognition. Records and maintains commendations in the employee’s file

  • You will terminate employees when their performance or behavior is detrimental to patients or others. Termination is done fairly, maintaining the employee's rights and dignity. Termination paperwork is complete and accurate and forwarded to the Human Resources Department. Information relating to termination is kept confidential.

  • You will assure the smooth functioning of the procedural areas by providing directions and suggestions for the patient care activities and priorities of the staff. Assist with direct patient care functions as needed.

  • You will assess problem or potential problem situations. Take pro-active, appropriate, and effective problem-solving action. Collaborate with others to problem solve or direct the problem to the appropriate resource(s).

  • You will deal directly with physicians, visitors and/or patients who express concerns or have complaints concerning any aspect of cardiovascular services. Respond professionally and in a kind and understanding manner. Provide written information and follow-up to the Chief Nursing Officer and/or Chief Operating Officer and/or AVP of Cardiovascular Operations when appropriate.

  • You will, in internal and external disasters and disaster drills, perform functions as described in the disaster plan.

  • You will respond to all code situations in the supervised depts. immediately: (Code Blue, Code Red, etc). Provide direction and act as a resource to other responders. Assign staff to respond as needed.\

  • You will assure that patient care assignments are based on the state licensing laws, hospital policy; and the individual education, experience skills, skills checklists and certification records of the nursing staff members.

  • You will provide clinical resource persons to nursing staff member. Assist staff with clinical needs when possible and provide assistance to other departments as requested for skills or specialized care of patients that they are unfamiliar with cardiac.

  • You will serve as a liaison between the medical staff and nursing. Attempt to meet the needs of medical staff when possible. Forward requests of the medical staff on to the Chief Nursing Officer and/or the Chief Operating Officer and/or AVP of Cardiovascular Operations. Provide adequate equipment/supplies and other needs to the medical staff.

  • Collaborate with Managers and staff of other nursing units and ancillary departments to ensure continuity of patient care and to prevent or resolve problems. Work directly with other managers to deal with conflict situations.

  • You will maintain the patient’s privacy and confidentiality of information at all times. Confidentiality is demonstrated by limiting patient-related discussions to only the appropriate healthcare workers and avoiding discussions in areas where information may be overheard.

  • You will assure that patient rights are maintained. Adhere to the hospital’s policy for observing patient rights with regard to making his/her own decisions regarding treatment, resuscitative measures, etc.

  • You will assure written reports, memos and other required paperwork are complete, accurate and legible. Paperwork is submitted on or before deadlines.

  • You will participate in hospital and/or nursing committees that are not required by the position. Attendance at committee meetings is consistent and on time. Assignment are completed as assigned. Is innovative and creative with committee work.

  • You will assure that documentation in the patient’s medical record is accurate and complete. Review records for required documentation. Take action as needed to ensure that staff documents appropriately.

  • You will read and sign job descriptions for CV staff.

  • You will ensure a safe and effective working environment; monitor and/or revise the department safety plan and/or any specific accreditation/regulatory required safety guidelines. Responsible for staff maintenance of credentials and competencies, per accrediting/ licensing agency and/or department guidelines as applicable.

  • You will employ a proactive approach in the optimization of safe outcomes and information systems by monitoring and improving the department workflow and enhancing operations, using peer-to-peer accountability and identifying solutions via collaboration. Implement process improvements utilizing tools such as lean principles. Role model situational awareness, using teachable moments to improve safety.

  • You will assure that policies, procedures, and practice guidelines are written specifically to the supervised departments listed under the Position Summary. Policies/procedures/practice guidelines are reviewed at least every two years and are updated as necessary.

  • Responsible for employee compliance to policies and procedures and performs associated actions upon non-compliance (i.e., licensure/certification compliance, incident report review requirements, disaster plan, in-services, influenza immunization etc.)

  • You will remain current and proficient with regulatory requirements for the provision of clinical services. Translate the requirements into operations to ensure compliance. Use automated systems to access, transmit and produce information.

  • You will coordinate the provision of comprehensive, interprofessional patient care that results in clinical excellence, optimal outcomes, and maximum patient and family satisfaction.

  • You will maintain expert-level knowledge of key quality metrics and registries [i.e., NCDR, TVT/STS, etc.] the supervised dept(s) participate in and be able to clearly articulate to executive leadership, current department performance and action items being taken to improve and drive performance.

  • You will work collaboratively with the Quality dept. for QA/QI data tracking and improvement opportunities.

  • You will work collaboratively in a dyad leadership with the CV Medical Director to continuously assess current quality performance, as well as plan, implement and evaluate practices.

  • You will understand and effectively apply quality improvement tools [i.e., Flowcharts, Pareto diagram, PDSA, FMEA, etc.] to drive positive quality performance and illustrate current process vs. desired process for executive review.

  • You will conduct and lead recurring multi-disciplinary Cardiology Dept. meetings to review quality and operational metrics. [Recommended quarterly or more often as needed].

  • You will strictly comply with all safety protocols and procedures to Demonstrate an understanding of HCA’s and Patients First's safety initiatives.

  • You will develop and manage department operational and capital budgets, approvals, and ongoing maintenance of the department(s), ensuring operation in a cost-effective manner.

  • You will proactively identify and plan for capital needs related to current equipment and future department projects.

  • You will work in conjunction with Divisional and Facility executives on capital projects.

  • You will ensure staffing plans and schedules meet department needs that reflect an understanding of the importance of cost-effectiveness.

  • You will create department strategies to achieve financial targets and staffing needs through optimizing productivity, supply/resource efficiency, minimizing incidental overtime and overtime percentage, and other areas according to department specifications.

  • You will project anticipated volume and demand for resources, conduct cost analysis, analyze and monitor budget reports and variances, evaluate human and material resource utilization, and make necessary adjustments. Analyze and interpret complex data sets and reports (variance analysis, financial/quality, population-specific reports).

  • You will ensure equipment and supply needs of nursing/physician care are met. Anticipate necessary equipment changes/updates/maintenance agreements and purchases as needed.

  • You will work collaboratively with the Supply Chain Director and the Clinical Resource Director, The CV

Director will hold ultimate accountability to adhere to the following:

  • Ensure consignment contracts are kept current along with vendor compliance to consignment policy.

  • Actively participates in SMAT/CV-CVAT

  • Ensure vendor compliance with Verified Professional tracking

  • You will follow company/facility policy for the introduction of new devices or commodities

  • You will direct, develop and implement strategic and operational/high-level projects to grow the business of the cardiovascular service line and expand the breadth of services offered by the facility to the community with secured compliance in ethical and legal business practices and accreditation/regulatory/government regulations.

  • You will identify and implement innovative solutions for practice or workflow changes to improve department, entity or system operations by leading unit projects and/or other department/system-directed activities. Proactively lead task forces and committees. May represent St. David’s Healthcare at assigned community or professional organization meetings.

  • You will drive change initiatives, maintaining effectiveness when experiencing major changes in work responsibilities or environment; adjust effectively to work within new work structures, processes, requirements or cultures. Partners effectively with stakeholders as appropriate.

What qualifications you will need:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university required

  • Master’s degree in Nursing, Business, or Healthcare Management preferred

  • 2+ years experience in cardiovascular setting required

  • 1+ years’ experience in management required

  • Or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

  • Directors employed prior to 1.1.2023: Current license and certification meet requirements.

  • Registered Nurse or Licensed Technologist with one of the following credentials: RN, RCIS, RT(R) required

  • BLS Certification as per St. David’s Healthcare Policy required

  • ACLS certification as per St. David’s Healthcare Policy within 90 days of hire date
