Job Summary:

Key Responsibilities:

• Mitochondrial function studies from recovered explanted human hearts.

• Animal (rodent) work, including surgeries and molecular analysis.

• Gene expression studies – RT-PCR and Western blot.

• Cell culture as needed.

• Data analysis.

• Diagnose and problem solve as it relates to the research project and respirometry equipment.

• Collaboration with other PRAs, Sr. PRAs, students, and post docs in the lab.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, or related field.

• A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, or related field.

• Prior experience or background within an experimental or wet lab.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of basic laboratory techniques including safety procedures and techniques.

• Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.

• Outstanding customer service skills.

• Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion.

• Knowledge of basic human anatomy, physiology, medical terminology.

The goal of this position is to investigate mitochondrial function from freshly explanted human heart tissue. One of the goals of our research program is to investigate how the human heart responds to different drugs that affect the mitochondria. The heart needs a lot of energy to sustain contractility. Mitochondria are the organelles responsible for energy generation. In heart failure, mitochondrial function is decreased. We have the ability to measure mitochondrial function in freshly explanted human hearts in response to different drugs. Our goal is to identify novel therapies for heart failure. In addition, the position involves molecular and cellular experiments and data analysis. The ideal candidate will be someone interested in understanding biological processes in heart disease, learning new methodologies and in performing careful data analysis. Employees in this position often obtain the training needed to pursue post-graduate education.
