The Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus School of Medicine invites applications for a Pediatric Neurosurgery Intermediate Laboratory Sciences Professional to conduct laboratory-based basic science research on mouse models of neonatal intraventricular hemorrhage and hydrocephalus. The position will involve assistance with animal model experiments, project execution, data interpretation, and team presentations with the Principal Investigator and other researchers in the lab. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, live animal work, animal survival surgery, animal behavioral and motor testing, preparation of tissues and cell cultures, microscopic analysis, and tissue analysis. We are seeking a creative and motivated research professional who will work in a collaborative environment of research clinicians and basic scientists to develop translational breakthroughs in pediatric hydrocephalus. This includes working as part of team, following established protocols, and may include experimental planning, data analysis, manuscript preparation, and conference presentations.

– this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, CO.

Joining the Alshareef lab will give the candidate the opportunity to work in an exciting area of translational research. We focus on finding treatments for children with neonatal post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus. In this research, we aim to identify the underlying causes of hydrocephalus. Dr. Alshareef's lab evaluates how the complement immune system is activated and regulated following neonatal intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH). IVH is a devastating disease for neonates and leads to over 90% morbidity and mortality while having no viable medical or surgical interventions. We previously found that complement system inhibition leads to reduced brain injury and lower hydrocephalus rates in an animal model. Our current focus is to better understand the mechanism of injury following IVH in both animals and humans. The Alshareef lab's research goal is to find translational medical therapies for the treatment of post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus. The candidate will have the opportunity to conduct experiment and design new experiments to help expand our understanding of this devastating disease. The University of Colorado offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes health insurance, life insurance, retirement plans, tuition benefits, ECO pass, paid time off – vacation, sick, and holidays and more.
