Summary What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position? This is a time limited assignment not-to-exceed 1-year and may be extended to a total 5 years within regulatory time limits or made permanent without further competition or terminated at management discretion. At the end of the assignment you will be returned to a position equivalent in tenure and grade as your former position. Responsibilities As a Supervisory Hydrologic Technician within the New England Water Science Center, some of your specific duties will include: Plans and executes Hydrologic Monitoring Branch fiscal, workforce, and data-collection activities in compliance with New England Water Science Center policies and procedures Promotes an environment of collaboration and generates a commitment to collaborative and cooperative efforts; maintains and improves working relationships and foster communications with DOI Bureaus, other USGS water offices in New England, other USGS science centers, other federal agencies, tribal, state, regional and local agencies, academia and non-government organizations. Oversees and coordinates hydrologic data collection and records processing for the Section using a variety of methods and equipment following established procedures and standard protocols as outlined in Technical Memoranda, Water-Supply Papers, TWRIs and WSC QA/QC plans. Coordinates continuous data processing of hydrologic data using the Site Information Management System (SIMS) and Records Management System (RMS). Completes the finalization of records by established Bureau and/or Office deadlines Operates government owned vehicle as an incidental driver. Physical Demands: Work assignments are both office and field related, with the office portion being are mainly sedentary. A percentage of work is performed in the field requiring physical activity which may include walking, bending, climbing, and lifting heavy equipment. Work Environment: Work is performed in both a field and office environment. Field conditions will vary depending on season. Heat, cold, and inclement weather may be encountered. Travel maybe required to attend meetings or review field operations. Selectee must provide a valid state driver's license & safe driving record. Selectee subject to successful completion of a pre-employment medical exam. Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position: Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued. Driver's License/Driving Record: You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties. Applicants for this position must meet the following requirements: (1) possess a valid State license, and (2) possess a safe driving record. If selected, you will be required to provide proof of a valid State license & a copy of your driving record. Pre-Employment Medical: Taking and passing a pre-employment medical examination at Federal expense is required due to the physical demands of this job. A background investigation will be required for this position. Continued employment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Qualifications For GS-12: Applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-12 level: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal service. Examples of such experience may include: planning and conducting the computation and collection of data from approximately twenty or more gaging stations; determining stage-discharge relations, computing rating tables and mean daily, monthly and annual discharge rates from these stations. Acting as a party chief and making direct measurements of flood flows under extremely difficult conditions. Collecting data including that required to compute flood flows by the slope-area method, by measurement of flow over dams, by flow through culverts and by flow over embankments. Obtaining hydrologic data from published and unpublished sources and conducting hydrologic studies relative to the frequency of flood and droughts. Planning and coordinating a ground water survey program for an area that may be either a small area with complex features or a larger area with planning and coordinating problems related to the scope of the ground water survey operations.
