The Senior Civil Engineer will lead civil engineering design projects for a variety of project types, including airfield, infrastructure, and facility projects for clients in the commercial aviation, federal government, military, and industrial business sectors. This position offers challenging work on a significant variety of projects, including airfield pavements and geometric layout and facilities and infrastructure at airports and federal sites, and requires a broad understanding of all civil engineering design and construction principles. This position is responsible for providing a full range of civil engineering design and production work including problem analysis, design layout, calculations, specifications writing, and report writing on projects of substantial variety and complexity. Project design tasks will include master planning, site layout and development, airfield layout and development, utilities, drainage, and grading,

Our team is routinely responsible for performing the following:

  • Develop master plans for state-of-the-art facilities for commercial aviation and federal government clients. These facilities include aircraft maintenance hangars, engine maintenance facilities, munitions storage, and munitions assembly, personnel training facilities, flight simulator facilities, classrooms, and administration buildings.

  • Design site infrastructure for these facilities, including road geometry, parking lot layout, utility layout, grading, and drainage design, and stormwater management facilities.

  • Design airfield infrastructure for regional and international airport clients, including runways, taxiways, parking aprons, alert shelters, engine runup areas, which would include detailed pavement design, geometric layout, grading, drainage, and stormwater management.

  • Design fuel storage and piping facilities at airports and military facilities.

  • Design ramp support facilities at airports including aircraft parking, maneuvering, jet bridge analysis, and ground support equipment servicing/parking.

The Senior Civil Engineer will work on an integrated design team within our Aviation & Federal Global Practice to perform the following duties:

  • Preparation of detailed drawings and specifications for all civil engineering portions of projects.

  • Site master planning, including site geometry, facility layout and orientation, vehicular access and parking, and pedestrian access.

  • Site development including grading design and earthwork calculations.

  • Site geometry and pavement design, including airfield and site pavements.

  • Utility system design for all utilities servicing the project, including utility routing, profiles, specifications, and coordination with other design disciplines.

  • Stormwater management design, including hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, stormwater conveyance design, flood control, and stormwater quantity and quality control.

  • Assist in the development of permitting documents and coordination with permitting agencies.

  • Determine project scope, schedule, and budget.

  • Compile information for client presentations and lead civil discussion during design Charrette and client review meetings.

  • Lead the civil project team to meet designated schedule and budget and provide quality deliverables including drawings, specifications, reports, and calculations.

  • Demonstrate ability to exercise independent design decisions and apply formulas, principles, and practices to complete designs.

  • Demonstrate moderate to high level of knowledge of assigned and related disciplines.

  • Provide leadership, guidance, and instruction to less experienced staff members.

  • Successfully communicate and correspond with internal design resources and external personnel and clients.

  • Assist in the construction administration process, including coordination with field personnel to resolve design related installation issues, the review of contractor shop drawings and calculations, field inspections, and testing of systems.

  • May perform project or design management duties.

  • May perform field inspections.

  • May perform business development duties.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program.

  • Minimum 7 years related experience, preferably consulting. Completion of master's degree in related field may be substituted for one year of experience.

  • PE license in Civil Engineering

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong presentation skills.

  • Strong knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures.

  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrate critical thinking skills.

  • Proficient in standard engineering techniques and procedures.

  • Experience in essential computer programs including Microsoft Office suite, Adobe Acrobat, Bluebeam, and Photoshop is strongly preferred.

  • Experience in the use of 3D software to model civil engineering design, including but not limited to Autodesk Civil 3D and AutoCAD, Bentley MicroStation, and Inroads, and SiteOps is preferred.

  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.

  • This position will be performing Federal related project work for Burns & McDonnell's clients. A qualified applicant must have the ability to obtain and maintain unescorted access authorization to the clients' facilities.
