Title: Product Safety Specialist, (R&D)

Location: Atlanta, GA

Job Summary:

The Product Safety Specialist will be responsible for the product safety and regulatory compliance needs for new product development (NPD) projects as well as to existing product improvement projects (Productivity and Maintenance) while working within a cross-functional team. This position will:

  • Contribute to the product safety and regulatory compliance efforts by performing routine and some complex research and assessments at the direction of more senior Product Safety staff

  • Require the ability to work effectively with other disciplines including Product and Design Engineering, Marketing, Industrial Design, Chemistry, Sourcing, Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain

Job Responsibilities by Capability:

Business Acumen – 10%

  • Identifies and communicates project level hazards and risks to project manager and team members with minimal guidance from more senior Product Safety staff.

  • Develops understanding of business impacts associated with product safety test plans in addition to implications of test results.

  • Understands impact of deliverables to project performance deliverables, schedule, and costs.

Technical Leadership – 10%

  • Performs Product Safety Assessments and develops associated testing requirement plan with minimal direction from Product Safetystaff and communicates results to Project Managers and project team.

  • Performs project or departmental research and assessments asdirected by Product Safety staff.

  • Performs new chemical and new component risk assessments against internal acceptance criteria to provide next step recommendations to senior Product Safety staff.

  • Benchmarks relevant competitive products and analyzes their technical specifications to Critical-To-Quality (CTQs) parameters.

  • Shares results with Product Safety staff before communicating toc ross-functional team members.

  • Develops product safety test plans, schedules and costs estimates for project.

  • Executes and completes recurrent business segment compliance deliverables as directed by Product Safety staff.

  • Implements existing programs to secure product seal certification (such as European Conformité Européene CE seal, Art & CreativeMaterials Institute Approved Product seal), UL, JPMA, etc. withminimal direction from Product Safety staff.

  • Assists senior Product Safety staff to develop new and adapting existing processes and procedures necessary for product safety and compliance activities.

Problem Solving – 30%

  • Develops product safety test plans and implements existing testing methodologies on a project level and communicates expectations to Project Managers and team members.

  • Uses a disciplined approach and the appropriate methodologies prescribed by Product Safety staff to analyze and determine the preferred solution to routine and sometimes complex technical challenges.

  • Analyzes product and raw material test results against defined internal acceptance criteria and performs critical analyses on anomalous results and recommends potential corrective actions to senior ProductSafety staff and cross-functional stakeholders.

Communication - 20%

  • Seeks minimal guidance from Product Safety staff on development of Product Safety Assessments and Compliance Plans to periodically update staff on progress and completion of milestones.

  • Prepares and provides testing status, results and implications with Product Safety staff to communicate with project managers and team members.

  • Summarizes complex technical concepts in simple, clear language appropriate to Product Safety staff before communicating with project managers and team members.

  • Recommends and presents solutions and opportunities in forums to encourage ideation and technical sharing.

  • Generates questions to validate the understanding of the subjectmatter to facilitate team member understanding

Organizational Agility – 10%

  • Develops moderate understanding of segment level structure and jobrelevant cross-function structure as well as key policies, processes,and procedures.

  • Participates on cross-functional teams with minimal direction of Product Safety staff to execute product initiatives.

Technical Matery - 20%

  • Applies a solid understanding of product specifications, material selection, manufacturing processes, cost constraints, regulatory requirements, and chemistries to assess the products being developed.

  • Develops Product Safety Assessments and laboratory test plans or supplier certifications for routine and somewhat complex products with minimal direction from Product Safety staff.

  • Engages suppliers and clearly directs their conformance activities to Newell expectations with minimal direction from Product Safety staff.

  • Engages external laboratories and related service providers to deliverr esults or services which meet Newell expectations with minima ldirection from Product Safety staff.

  • Develops risk mitigation plans for product engineering as necessary toachieve product compliance.

  • Executes existing programs to acquire product seal certification (suchas European Conformité Européene CE seal, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Design for Environment seal), UL, JPMA, etc. withminimal direction from Product Safety staff.

  • Assures completion of product and raw material testing,communication to the product development teams and documentation without adversely impacting project schedule.

  • Develops and maintains hazard communication documents (such asSafety Data Sheets and labels) for new and existing products usingstate of the art software and automated data subscriptions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, Toxicology, Product Safety, Regulatory Affairs, or closely related field required

  • 2-5 years of regulatory compliance experience required

  • Demonstrates strong knowledge of product testing techniques and methodologies

  • Demonstrates ability to apply various problem solving techniques

  • Demonstrates strong knowledge of industry compliance requirements

  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal and project management skills

  • Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Demonstrates ability to perform in a team environment

  • Demonstrates competence with Hazard Communication Regulations (e.g., FHSA, OSHA, and GHSregulations) , Chemical Restriction Regulations (e.g., CPSIA, REACh SVHC), Chemical RegistrationRegulations (e.g., TSCA, DSL, NICNAS), and Consumer Product Safety Regulations (e.g., NHTSA, CPSC,FDA)
